The term "Yurumei" not only means their historical migration but their ongoing survival, adaption, and preservation of their distinct language, culture, and traditions. The journey wasn't only physical but also mentally challenging, spiritual, and cultural odyssey, as the #garifunapeople maintained a strong sense of unity and identity despite centuries displacement, colonialism and confrontations. While you dive into the story of Garifuna Settlement Day, come experience the culture, history, and rhythms firsthand at #PalmentoGrove The #garifunapeople are descendants of African slaves, brought to the Caribbean by European colonizers in the 17th century. The fusion of indigenous people (Arawak's and Caribs) produced a unique and resilient people known as Garifuna. The #garifunapeople in St. Vincent were known for their resistance to the European colonization. Especially, the British who fought to control the island. But they fought back with attempts to colonize the island for years leading to many confrontations. In 1796, after the #garifunapeople successfully resisted the British colonization after so many years, the British government made drastic changes to eliminate the Garifuna, forcibly exiled the entire Garifuna population out from St. Vincent. The #garifunapeople were placed and packed up into ships. Not too many survived because of the harsh conditions, but we're sent off to the coast of Honduras, along other parts of Central America. The survivors eventually established themselves in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua. The date November 19th is highly symbolic because it represents survival and the ability of the #garifunapeople to maintain their cultural identity despite the adversity they faced. Overtime, the #garifunapeople began to adapt to their new surrounding. 🤍💛🖤Roots in the Sea; Culture on land🤍💛🖤 Hudut: The Fusion of Sea and land Hudut is a example of the #garifunapeople ability to create a dish that both practical and deeply rooted in their cultural identity. The dish reflects on the strong connection to both sea and land, as they rely on fishing also crops like the plantains and coconut trees. The #garifunapeople relies on the sea for food(conch, lobster, shrimp, fish)which is why fish is the central ingredient in the Hudut. As on land, coconut trees highlights the tropical environment, in which the #garifunapeople most settled(on the coast). Coconut is known as a key ingredient for #garifunacooking. It adds creaminess and richness to the dishes. Not only for it's rich flavor but also for it's availability(making pastries and drinking coconut water). The plantains is another important element. Plantains are staple food in #garifunacuisune that reflects on the agricultural practices of the #garifunapeople. The mash plantains( the ripe & the green) is boiled and mashed together and served as a side dish, to the richness of coconut milk and fried fish.
