How can there be peace where there remains gross inequities and greed in the world? The tourism industry is no different, while the fittest of local and indigenous people advocate for meaningful inclusion in the decision making process, equity remains a fleeting dream. In Belize, like the Caribbean and the wider world, locals who are desirous of offering tourism products and services that empowers the collective find themselves as targets to be eliminated by the neo-colonial regime. Oftentimes token tourism projects/initiatives seemingly aimed at involving local/indigenous stakeholders are really designed to divide and conquer the native population. Therefore resulting with the ultimate beneficiary of tourism resources/assets beit land, cultural heritage (tangible and intangible) etc legally redistributed and finding their way in the possession of foreign invaders sexily referred to as investors.

Leaders of Countries around the world are called to ensure that tourism policies instituted do not disenfranchise and displace the local/indigenous people. With the soaring cost of real estate caused by tourism demand, the future of Indigenous People living in peace in their home territories on their ancestral land remains daunting. Yet there is hope that locals and indigenous people will rise-up and equip themselves to chart their own progressive path in the travel industry. This can be done through first and foremost embracing oneโ€™s cultural heritage with honor and building upon the majestic legacy of the forefathers.

Education does play a crucial role. In the process, it is also useful to learn the inner workings of capitalism. For the indigenous people, a balanced approach to life is necessary, developing oneself mentally, physically, financially, emotionally and spiritually in order to achieve success in the tourism industry and to be respected. Native/indigenous people must devise a plan to strive, for it is said โ€œIf you fail to plan, you plan to failโ€. They must learn to choose their leaders wisely based on character and capacity and not sentiments. They must hold external partners accountable for meaningful inclusion. Most of all collective action is a must.

It takes all stakeholders in the industry being treated equitable for peace to be maintained. We all have our part to play.

๐Ÿ“ข๐Ÿ“ข Straight off an international flight with Palmentogrove being the ๐Ÿฅ‡๐Ÿฅ‡๐Ÿ“ข stop. Ms. Joseph was so enthused about the opportunity to immerse and learn more about her Garifuna Heritage given that one of her parents is originally from St. Vincent. It was such a wonderful time.
