Prime Minister Briceño pushes for Tren Maya tracks to cross Belize border

Belize’s Prime Minister Johnny Briceño has announced that his government has formally proposed the extension of Mexico’s Maya Train into Belize. The proposal, which was submitted to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, outlines a plan to connect Quintana Roo to Belize and eventually extend the railway to Guatemala, aiming to strengthen regional integration and boost economic and tourism exchange.

Prime Minister Briceño explained that the proposed expansion would occur in two stages. The first stage involves constructing over seven kilometers of track to link southern Quintana Roo with the Belize border. The second stage would see the railway extended through Belize to Guatemala, providing access to the iconic Tikal ruins, one of the most visited tourist attractions in Central America.

According to Briceño, the expansion of the Maya Train could bring significant benefits to Belize. He emphasized the potential for increased European tourism, as visitors to Cancun could easily access Belize through the railway. Briceño also highlighted the opportunities for enhanced trade between Belize and Mexico, as well as improved logistics for moving goods to the United States and Canada.

“This would bring many benefits to Belize. It could open a new market for tourists since those who come to Cancun are often from Europe, and we don’t have many European visitors currently. With the Maya Train, it would be much easier for them to travel to Belize. Additionally, it would facilitate trade, making it easier to move products between our countries and beyond,” Briceño said.

The Prime Minister revealed that discussions on this proposal began with former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2022. President Sheinbaum, during a meeting in October 2024, expressed her willingness to continue the efforts initiated by her predecessor.

“The studies still need to be done, but I am very hopeful that this can be consolidated,” Briceño stated.

The proposal is currently awaiting an official response from President Sheinbaum. In 2023, Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinoza initially suggested the possibility of extending the Maya Train into Belize once Mexico’s railway project was complete.

Briceño remains optimistic about the initiative, expressing confidence in the economic and tourism opportunities it could unlock for Belize. “This project is about more than just connectivity. It’s about regional growth, development, and creating opportunities for Belizeans and our neighbors.”

The Maya Train, a flagship project of Mexico, has the potential to transform regional connectivity, and Belize’s proposal could mark a new chapter in the country’s integration into this ambitious initiative.
