We at Wildside are humbled to have known her from we were kids. And extend our condolences to her family and her friends
Belize and the conservation field mourns the loss of an amazing woman. Here are words on the passing of the magnificent Ms. Lou Nicolait from our Director, Celso P**t.
"In the realm of Belize's conservation movement, Lou Nicolait stands as a beacon of dedication and passion. A pioneer among women in this field, her impact resonates deeply, and I feel privileged to be able to pay tribute to this remarkable Friend. I first crossed path with Lou in the mid-1990s when I started my journey at the Belize Zoo. Little did I know that this encounter would mark the beginning of a profound connection with a woman whose commitment to environmental conservation was truly unparalleled. Lou, as the founder and coordinator of the Belize Center for Environmental Studies, had already carved out a path as a trailblazer in her field ; I urged the up-and-coming conservationist in Belize to read up about her.
Beyond her professional achievements, Lou became an integral part of our The Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center family. Her camaraderie with Sharon, one of her best friends, was palpable, and we cherished her as much as we did any member of our "tight-knit community;" she effortlessly claimed the coveted number one spot on our list of invited guests for every event, and was always there!
Lou's loyalty knew no bounds. She weathered the highs and lows with us; she literally stood, sit and lay next to Sharon until the very end. Their friendship was a testament to the enduring power of human connection, a bond that transcended time and circumstances. Lou was also one of my sanctuaries during some of my most frustrating moments at the zoo. Her wisdom, calm, and genuine care served as a guiding light during my challenging times. In this remarkable woman, I found not only a mentor, but also a true and trusted friend. Our friendship deepened when she discovered the familial connection we shared. Lou's close friend in Placencia, Cherry Vernon, happens to be my aunt. It was a serendipitous twist of fate that brought us even closer, solidifying the threads of our connection.
Lou's legacy lives on in the rustling leaves, the splashing waves, the vibrant wildlife, and the very heartbeat of Belize's natural wonders. May her spirit continue to inspire and guide us as we carry on the torch, she so brilliantly lit decades ago."
