Hello Fellow Travelers,
Last March, Ray and I had a flight to Placencia Belize booked. The country shut down it’s boarders due to the Corona virus. Last week we returned to this small country and I want to fill you in on the changes.
As of January 21, 2021, here are the changes:
1. A traveler must get a negative Covid-19 test no more than 48hrs. before arriving. You must present this test before boarding the plane, immediately upon deboarding and again after passing through customs.
2. You must have another negative Covid-19 before boarding the plane to return to the states. You can get this test in Belize City at the airport, in San Pedro and Placencia Village.
3. The government requires all people on the public streets to wear a mask and if you do not, the police can fine you $250 USD. (That is a lot of money to the local population and they wear masks.)
4. There is an 8:30pm curfew.
5. Instead of simply showing up at restaurants, one must make a reservation. Placencia has some world class restaurants and it is well worth the time to do that.
Now for the Good news:
1. The cost of tours such as monkey river tours or diving adventures has dropped to about 50% of what they were last year.
2. The water has never looked clearer.
3. Everything seems to be cleaned up.
If you are going to visit this beautiful place, now is the time! The dive sites are empty and you’ll have the ruins or other places you visit all to yourselves.
As a reminder, there is a 900-mile reef just off the coast of Belize and that is the second largest reef in the world. This reef like all of the Caribbean has been invaded by Asian Lion fish. Our dive masters speared several Lion fish and then immediately fed those fish to eels, reef sharks and even a turtle. They are trying to teach the sharks that is fish is food so that these animals can clean the reef of these invaders.
Lastly, crime. Due to the covid shut down, the average wage in this country has dropped to $1.70/day. No one can live on that. In Belize City, crime is a problem. Lucky for you, you don’t have to send a single minute there. The only international airport is Belize City and your plane will land there. After passing through customs, you can walk directly into the local airport and catch a flight to your destination. Within a few minutes, all you have to do is kick back and pop open a cold beer.
