Yesssss! Wildlife doesn’t care if a biodegradable product is in their nose or belly.. It still burns CO2 to produce these products....yes a step in the right direction, but let’s try to embody the time where we were all just fine before any plastic 👏👏👏

As the Capitalist 'free market' is expected to solve the problem of single use plastics with ever more ingenious alternatives, can we go back to that time before straws, before plastic bags? When drinks from the restaurant came without any straw, when we were expected to bring our own bags to the store, when food was served on re-usable plates.

So often the REDUCE part is forgotten from reduce, reuse, recycle

! First person to accurately ID these unusual specimens gets a drink coupon for 2 at Asha's Culture Kitchen! Southern Belize 🇧🇿 is still wild! Even our guides that were born and raised in these waters are still surprised at times at what they discover!

These “specimens” were washed ashore in the 100’s on Punta Negra beach after a stormy week. We were there with a student group doing a beach clean up and tropical marine ecology intro course, but even the instructor doesn’t know what these are!! Their hard and smooth, not squishy.. 🤔🤔

Just doing our part - but mein’ its an uphill battle!! This amount of trash was collected at the end of a fishing trip by two individuals in under two hours 😢😧👏👏 At Kaimani we strive to be - no plastics used period and always cleaning the beach and reef! Many guests volunteer part of their tour to aid our efforts, and have fun while their at it! Do you have any creative suggestions for what to do with it all now?

The most common trash item is plastic bottles followed by styrofoam, and odd items that are also very, very common are toothbrushes, shoes, lightbulbs, and medicine containers (even syringes).

It’s a huge step that GOB is implementing their 2019 plastic ban, but it’s still up to the businesses and individuals. Just don’t use plastic....Period...How you ask?? Well it was only invented in the 1920’s so what did people do before then - or take example from most indigenous communities now.. It’s far cheaper and actually healthier to remove plastic use from your lifestyle, and it surely won’t hurt to try 🌎 ❤️ How do you reduce plastic in your life?

!! Just wow!

There are reports that the scarlet macaws are back at Red Bank - early this year. I highly recommend this half day trip. Get there early - before sunrise if possible - pick up a guide in the village and watch the flocks fly in from the west. Or make it late afternoon when they gather to fly to their roost. And if you are lucky, you will see them bunch up to feed on fruiting trees like this image taken last year. I also recommend a side trip to the valley behind the hills which use to be a feeding ground for the macaws and is now the Mennonite villages of Roseville and Nueland - farmland.

These kids are facing hard circumstance in life, yet are all trying (despite the odds) to get themselves through school, and are succeeding. The Cost of Indiscriminate Gear

This is the reality of using an indiscriminate gear like gillnets.

On November 15th, 2019 at 10:10 AM, tour guides diving within the Gladden Spit & Silk Cayes Marine Reserve found 450 feet of gillnets strung out along the North Wall (one net was 400 feet long with another 50 foot net attached to it). The dive instructors brought the nets and bycatch back to Ray Caye where they measured the nets and counted the bycatch in the presence of two Coast Guard officers on patrol with two SEA rangers.

The photos speak for themselves as to how indiscriminate this gear is and how destructive it is to critical keystone species like sharks.

Under current regulations, a gillnet should be no longer than 300 feet and should not be attached to another net. Belizean law already prohibits the use of gillnets within Marine Protected Areas. This highlights the challenges of regulating and enforcing this type of gear.

As a nation, we cannot afford to have illegal fishing activities destroy our food security and our fishing based and tourism livelihoods. Oceana reiterates its commitment to supporting licensed Belizean fishers transition away from this gear. It's time to .
