This week we will highlight Hokeb Ha Cave in Blue Creek. The cave itself starts near the village of Santa Cruz, where the water of what becomes the Blue Creek River flows underground. Hence the origin of the name Hokeb Ha, which in Maya means "where the water enters the earth". The entrance of the cave can be reached in the village of Blue Creek by hiking a trail that takes you along the Blue Creek river, first well marked then vague until it gets steeper and a 10ft waterfall and the cave entrance appear. The creek emerges from the underground in the cave entrance and continues on over limestone creating a waterfall and cascading on as Blue Creek. The cave is theorized to have been used for ceremonial purposes by the ancient Maya in the Classic Period. Entering the cave requires swimming through a fresh water pool yet the great interior makes it worth it. For safety reasons a guide should be used to explore the interior of the cave.
