Lionfish Invasion Threatens Belize Barrier Reef
Lionfish Invasion Threatens Belize Barrier Reef:
If you join Ridge to Reef Expeditions or TIDE Tours Toledo for #snorkeling and #diving excursions, you will find numerous Lionfish in the Port Honduras Marine Reserve and at the Sapodilla Cayes.
What you need to know is, that Lionfish are non-native in the Caribbean Sea and a significant problem for the local ecosystem! This invasive species is out-breeding, out-competing and out living native fish stocks and other marine species. The consequences resulting of this man-made ecological disaster can impact food security and the livelihood of local fishermen.
Invasive Lionfish eat everything that they can fit into their mouths. This led to the decimation of native marine species that are important for ecological, commercial or recreational reasons.
The Lionfish problem is exacerbated by the fact that this species can live in a wide range of water quality, salinity, temperature and depth with relatively no stress. The variability of parameters reaches from 1 foot deep to beyond 1000 feet and a tolerance in water temperatures down to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Lionfish sightings are reported from Rhode Island (USA) as far as Brazil. They can live in excess of 15 years and have no natural predators.
In order to minimize the negative effects of Lionfish the diving #community is integral in decreasing Lionfish numbers on invaded reefs.
Learn with Ridge to Reef Expeditions how to #Scuba Dive and #Spearfish in a beautiful environment.
There is evidence that native species learn how to eat Lionfish, but humans can provide key control to save the local ecosystems from devastation.
With adequate training and necessary gear local fishermen and sport divers can make a difference in this plague.
After all the Lionfish tastes delicious in various recipes and is also available Waluco's Restaurant Punta Gorda!
