The reason for this is that, as the edge of the Barrier Reef comes south along the coast of Belize, it separates itself further and further from the mainland. The result is a broad expanse of coral reef with channels that go down from 90 to 110 feet, but rising abruptly in

to shoals and cayes, providing many nearby SCUBA locations. At last official count there are a minimum of 20 named Belize diving sites in the southern waters off Placencia, bursting with untouched coral and abundant fish life.

Monkey River Tours:
This Belize river tour takes you to the South of Placencia to Monkey River, a birdwatcher's paradise. Much of Monkey River has been declared a Special Conservation Area, with howler monkeys and toucans in the forest, and manatees at the mouth of the river. We'll take you up the Monkey River by boat. SCUBA DIVE FACT:
Good news, you don't have to be a keen swimmer to learn to dive. In fact, I have done introduction diving with people who didn't even know how to swim. Of course it is best if you can but your diving abilities won't necessarily be related to your swimming abilities. Fortunately, you don't swim underwater like you would at the surface (imagining this makes me laugh every time…). Whilst diving, arms are useless and the only propulsion comes from the legs, so a gentle kick with the fins is more than enough and you don't need to be an Olympic swimmer to do so. In my opinion, the most important things to remember when moving underwater are to remain calm and to have good balance so you don't rock from side to side waving your arms.
