• Xunantunich
o Meaning: “Maiden of the Rock” or “Stone Lady” in Yucatec Maya Language
• Situated at San Jose Soccutz Village in Western Belize
• Accessible via an old hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River.
• This is a Classic Period Site, its core dates to around AD 600 & was occupied for about 400 years.
• Oddly, it had an unusual rise while most other cities in the region had collapsed.
• But a Glyph suggests it may have been a satellite of the large Peten City of Naranjo (in Modern-day Guatemala)
• El Castillo – the tallest structure stands at 130 Ft tall and is the 2nd largest Maya Structure in Belize, after Caana – the main structure at Caracol.
• Although often misinterpreted as the primary structure at Xunantunich, El Castillo was actually a large multi-complex building serving as dwelling, shrine & administrative hub for the elite.
• At Xunantunich, you can often see curious spider monkeys upclose.
• In 2016, archeologists uncovered one of the largest burial chambers ever discovered in Belize.
• The burial chamber was 16ft to 20ft below ground where the skeletal remains of a royal male between 20 to 30-year-old was found.
• Along with hieroglyphic panels, animal bones and offerings hidden for 1,300 years
• Today, Xunantunich remains one of the most popular Maya Sites in Belize bringing in thousands of visitors monthly.
