Temporary Closure of the Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve

The Institute of Archaeology, National Institute of Culture and History (IA/NICH) hereby advises Tour Operators, Tour Guides, and the General Public that due to the ongoing upgrade of the George Price Highway in San Jose Succotz Village, Cayo District, it has become necessary for the closure of the Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve for the period September 23 to October 7, 2024.

For any further inquiries or concerns, kindly contact the Institute of Archaeology at 822-2106 or via email at [email protected].

The IA/NICH regrets any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding.

Please note that, unless otherwise advised, all other archaeological reserves remain open for visitations.

Rental golf cards are included in vehicles that must have a bridge pass. Please be patient with the wardens on staff that are ensuring the golf cart you are in meets their requirements. While it is not your responsibility to pay for this pass, it'd be wise to make sure that the cart has the pass when you are first picking up your rental.

🌊🐢 2024 Ambergris Caye Sea Turtle Nesting Season Update! 🐢🌊

Exciting news from the beach! As of July 26th, we have 23 confirmed nests! Here's the breakdown:

🐢 10 nests hatched and fully counted:

1 Green nest 🌿
7 Loggerhead nests 🐢
2 suspected Loggerhead nests (unfortunately flooded due to the tropical storm, no eggs developed)

🌟 Total of 354 hatchlings:

273 Loggerheads 🐢
81 Green 🌿

Every little hatchling is a big step towards a brighter future for our ocean friends! 🌊✨

As per the BTB back in 2022:
"Public Notice: Vacation Rentals (Short-term) Vs. Residential Rentals (Long-term)
The Registrar of Hotels hereby provides the following public notices:

Guests/Visitors who arrive in Belize on Tourist Visas and pay for Accommodation/Boarding must stay at an Accommodation Provider that is registered with BTB. Guests/Visitors who arrive in Belize on Tourist Visas and obtain monthly extensions to the initial Visa must also stay at an Accommodation Provider that is registered with BTB, notwithstanding the length of stay. Be it six weeks, six months, two years, etc. This does not include individuals that are staying with family and relatives.

Guests/Visitors who arrive in Belize on Tourist Visas are prohibited from engaging in Residential Rentals, as they do not possess the required immigration status, such as Permanent Residency, QRP Membership, Work Permit, Student Visa Holder, etc. Kindly note that as long as the Accommodation Provider is registered with BTB, proprietors are mandated by Law to remit the 9% Tax to BTB for use/rental of a registered property’s rooms/units. This is notwithstanding the guest’s length of stay or immigration status."
