Tropical Bliss in Belize

Caye Caulker is a small Caribbean island off the coast of Belize. It’s divided by a narrow channel called the Split, where there’s a bar and a sandy beach. To the south is the island’s only settlement, known as Caye Caulker Village. The north of the island is home to dense mangrove forest and diverse birdlife, protected by a forest reserve. The Caye Caulker Marine Reserve has dive sites on the Belize Barrier Reef.

The iconic Lazy Lizard Bar & Grill is arguably Caye Caulker’s most famous attraction due in part to its close proximity to the Split. In fact, ‘The Lazy Lizard’ and ‘The Split’ are often used interchangeably to collectively describe this scenic expanse of sea and land now dubbed ‘The Land of the Lazy Lizard’. The Split in Caye Caulker, Belize was originally a hand-dug channel that was widened by Hurricane Hattie in 1961. The Split’s cool, clear, aqua waters is now Caye Caulker, Belize’s most famous swimming area.

You don't need to take an organized tour to see and feed the tarpon. For $5 Belize, you get a baggie of sardines and as soon as the tarpon see the fish, they will come to the platform. Be sure to hold the bait with the tail between your fingers. The tarpon get to be very large (3-4 feet long) and are strong jumpers and swimmers and will strike at your outstretched hand. Their mouths are like sandpaper and you get a skin burn if they grab your hand. Cheap thrills for half an hour.

A 40 minute bumpy golf cart ride along the shoreline going North from Sapphire Beach.
The very best from the Beach Snorkling on the entire island.
The coral reef is very close to the shoreline there. A nice over the water restaurant & Bar for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Huge tarpons at night are witnessed from the restaurant's dock.
