SPOTTED!👀

This fungus was spotted by a recent guest of the Castaway Cottages.

While fungi can be notoriously difficult to identify, this appears to be a Yellow Patch fungus.

"They typically appear in early to mid-summer in forests or natural areas or landscapes. They are found singly or scattered, usually under hardwood trees, especially oaks, occasionally under pines. The roots of the mushroom (fungal species) become one with the roots of adjoining host plants. This is referred to as an ectomycorrhizal relationship.

This species is suspected to be toxic and is related to other known toxic species of Amanita and should be avoided." But it was interesting to admire from afar...

SPOTTED!👀 🐢

We found this gal looking for a soft spot to lay her eggs!

This is a Blanding’s Turtle. The Blanding’s Turtle is a medium-sized turtle easily identified by its bright yellow throat and chin. Unlike most Ontario turtles that have wide, flatter shells, the Blanding’s Turtle has a domed shell that resembles an army helmet.

Blanding’s Turtles live in shallow water, usually in large wetlands and shallow lakes with lots of water plants. It is not unusual, though, to find them hundreds of metres from the nearest water body, especially while they are searching for a mate or traveling to a nesting site.

Blanding’s Turtles are “threatened”, meaning the species is not endangered, but is likely to become endangered if steps are not taken to address factors threatening it.

The most significant threats to the Blanding’s Turtle are loss or fragmenting of habitat, motor vehicles, and raccoons and foxes that prey on eggs. Illegal collection for the pet trade is also a serious threat.

What you can do to help the Blanding’s Turtle?

Be a good steward!

•Private land owners have a very important role to play in species recovery. If you find Blanding’s Turtle on your land, you may be eligible for stewardship programs that support the protection and recovery of species at risk and their habitats.
•Every year, turtles all over the province must cross busy roads to get to their nesting sites. Female Blanding’s Turtles sometimes mistake gravel shoulders of roads as good nesting sites! Watch for turtles on the roads, especially between May and October.
•Never buy native species of turtles or any turtles that have been caught in the wild. If you see native species of turtles for sale in a pet store or food market, please contact the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
•The Ontario Reptile and Amphibian Atlas also collects observations of all Ontario reptiles and amphibians. Submit your observations at: www.ontarionature.org/atlas
•Report any illegal activity related to plants and wildlife to 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667).

SPOTTED! 👀

A first at the Castaway Cottages… the Canadian lynx!

Unfortunately, we were not able to snap a photo of this big cat but we wanted to share some information about this beauty!
Lynx can be found throughout Canada’s boreal forest, which in Ontario generally means north of Algonquin. However, not many people manage to spot them since lynx are notoriously wary of people.

The best way to tell if you have seen a lynx is their unique ear tufts (which are much longer than those of bobcats) and their stubby black-tipped tails.

Lynx are specially adapted to be able to catch their main prey: the snowshoe hare. These two species are so closely tied that their populations cycle across the country. It is thought that as snowshoe hare populations increase, so do lynx, to a point. Eventually lynx reduce the snowshoe hare population, resulting in increased competition among lynx for prey. The lynx population then declines and the cycle repeats approximately every 10 years. This characteristic predator-prey cycle is one of the most studied examples as lynx populations can be determined from Hudson’s Bay Company fur trapping records all the way back to the 1800s.

This means that — depending where in the 10-year cycle you are — catching sight of a lynx is a rare treat indeed! Source: Ontario Parks

We recently upgraded our outdoor furniture cushion storage boxes.

Other rental properties might let you use wet or dirty cushions or even require you to have to drag the cushions for the outdoor furniture into the cottage at night...not at Castaway!
