Hosting since 2010 with many ups & downs. Our first guest experience 14 years ago was fraud with a stolen credit. After losing a full months rent ($3000 on an Ottawa Condo) AirBnB blamed me for not checking ID. Our second guest experience was the same & I spotted the fraud while handing over the keys. This platform has greatly improved since 2008 but itā€™s is expensive for guests to use. AirBnB charges guests a 20% service fee. Hosts are charged a 3% transaction fee.

We have the hardy boys series in our library because the author lived nearby. Iā€™m intrigued by the mystery at The Old Mill because they are all over!

What Ottawa area mysteries might the Hardy Boys have pursued if the famed childrenā€™s seriesā€™ author, Carleton Place-born Leslie McFarlane (a.k.a. Franklin W. Dixon), had located the young sleuthsā€™ adventures closer to his birthplace?

ā€œThe Secret of the Old Almonte Millā€?
ā€œThe Peace Tower Treasureā€?
ā€œThe Secret of the Lusk Cavesā€?

Leslie McFarlane, born in Carleton Place on October 25, 1902, authored the original worldwide series of Hardy Boys adventure books (1927-1943) under the pseudonym ā€œFranklin W. Dixonā€.

Leslieā€™s father, John Henry McFarlane, a local Carleton Place school principal, was born in Lanark and had attended Ottawa Normal School. During a stint teaching in the village of Clayton, John Henry boarded with the town cooper (barrel maker) and ended up meeting and marrying Leslieā€™s mother, the cooperā€™s daughter, Rebecca.

Leslie McFarlane wrote numerous books, magazine articles and scripts over the course of half a century. During the 1940s McFarlane wrote and directed for the National Film Board of Canada and was later employed to do the same at the CBC.

Leslieā€™s son, legendary hockey broadcaster Brian McFarlane, recalled, at the age of 10, discovering that his father was the author of the renowned Hardy Boys books, ā€œIt was like finding out my father was Santa Claus!ā€.

After his passing in 1977, Leslie McFarlaneā€™s ashes were spread into the Ottawa River.

Gary spoke to the Heritage Committee last week & research is now underway for the Manor to be listed on the Historic Registry. Built in 1842 by Robert Teskey who immigrated from County Cork Ireland in 1823 with his family as part of the Peter Robinson Settlers. His older brother, Joseph Teskey, built the stone home across the river & his younger brother, Albert Teskey, built the other stone home down the lane. The Teskey family built a gristmill, sawmill & woollen mill & made the Village a prosperous hub.

Later this month, weā€™re doing a deeper dive into the history of the Manor with the help of this talented team who we meet through Phantoms Of Yore

Get to know the team!

For those who are new to following us during our paranormal adventures, here is a short introduction of our team!

Steve - is our Lead Researcher focusing on the history and lore of the sites we investigate. He prefers to concentrate on EVPs and motion detection during our investigations.

Outside the paranormal, Steve is a military veteran, published short story author and avid supporter of local theatre.

Maria - is our resident Reiki Master/Teacher and likes to focus more on old school techniques (i.e. dowsing rods). Maria is also our team's Lead Videographer/Photographer.

Outside of the paranormal, Maria is a college student studying Library and Information Technology. She is also a student of philosophy and history.

Victoria - is our Lead Investigator who also has a very strong intuitive sense in the places we investigate. Specializing in the Estes Method, she is generally our first line of communication with those from the other side.

Outside the paranormal Victoria is a Law Clerk working in Wills and Estates as well as being an active genealogical researcher and animal lover.

To those who follow and investigate with us, thank you for all your support as the adventure continues!!!
