SURPLUS FOOD FROM STFX MEAL HALL SUPPORTING RESIDENTS OF ANTIGONISH - The Antigonish Community Fridge has partnered with Sodexo, the food service provider for St. FX University. Together they support those in need and reduce food waste in the campus town. Sodexo prepares meals using surplus food that would otherwise be discarded, packaging them for community fridges at the Antigonish Farmers' Market and local library. To date, the partnership has distributed 13,000 meals to those in need!

Antigonish, Nova Scotia, is a small town with a rich history dating back thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by the Mi’kmaq people, who named it "Nalikitquniejk" meaning “where branches are torn off trees by bears gathering beech nuts.”

In the late 1700s, Scottish settlers arrived, bringing their culture and traditions, which continue to shape the town's identity. Antigonish is now known as the “Highland Heart of Nova Scotia” due to its strong Scottish heritage.

The town is also home to St. Francis Xavier University, founded in 1853, which has become a cornerstone of education and culture in the region. Today, Antigonish blends its Indigenous roots, Scottish legacy, and academic spirit to create a vibrant community.
