DYK? Perinatal Mood Disorders (PMDs) do not discriminate and can impact anyone. Women of every culture, age, income level, and race can develop depression and anxiety during pregnancy and up to a year after the birth of their baby.
As a community, we can support mothers and families by increasing awareness of PMDs, decreasing stigma, and improving access to mental health services. If you or someone you know is experiencing PMD symptoms, it is important to connect with professional support.
DYK? As many as 1 in 5 new mothers will develop a perinatal mood disorder in the first year after their baby is born. Family members may be the first to notice symptoms. Symptoms differ for everyone, and might include:
• Crying and sadness
• Feelings of guilt, shame, or hopelessness
• Feelings of anger or irritability
• Constant worry and/or racing thoughts
Help is available! For more information on symptoms of perinatal mood disorders and where to get support, check out hpePublicHealth.ca/mental-health-after-pregnancy
