The Northern Resident Killer Whales are grouped into three main clans—A, G, and R. Here’s a breakdown of the approximate number of matrilines in each clan:

• A Clan: 20+ matrilines
• G Clan: 15+ matrilines
• R Clan: 15+ matrilines

Each matriline typically consists of 2 to 4 generations, all descending from a common female ancestor. These clans are determined by their unique vocal dialects, which are distinct between clans but shared among matrilines within the same clan.

Now that's what we call a killer view!

This throwback Thursday goes to Bigg's killer whale Jack (T137A). Jack is a favorite amongst our crew and guests, and he always seems to leave us wanting more. We look forward to seeing Jack and the rest of the T137 family this year on our whale watching adventures!

During July and August, Chinook salmon make up about 90% of the diet for resident killer whales in their habitats. Southern residents consume approximately 1,200 to 1,400 Chinook daily, totaling 67,000 to 81,000 over these two months. Northern residents require about 420 to 500 Chinook per day, amounting to 26,000 to 31,000 in the same period.

Assuming that resident killer whale populations grow at their maximum rate of 2.6% over the next decade, an estimated 1.5-1.8 million Chinook may be needed annually to support these populations.

So-called ‘resident’ killer whales are one of three sympatric ecotypes of Orcinus orca found in the coastal waters of the cold-temperate northeastern Pacific. Each ecotype is ecologically specialized and has a distinct diet. Resident killer whales are fish feeders and, in particular, specialize on Pacific salmon. Field studies of foraging behaviour and diet have shown that although most available salmonids are consumed by resident killer whales, Chinook salmon, the largest but also one of the least abundant species, is the whales’ primary prey. Chum salmon is an important prey species for a period in the fall, but the smaller pink and sockeye salmon are not significant components of the whales’ diet despite great seasonal abundance in some years.

These numbers highlight the crucial role of Chinook salmon in sustaining killer whale populations.

🐋 What to Expect at Orca Camp Vancouver Island 🏕️

Orca sightings are magical, but remember—they’re wild animals, and we can’t guarantee encounters. That said, during our 4-day/3-night tours (July–mid-September), most guests see Orcas at least once, sometimes multiple times!

Our low-impact, natural camp has earned the trust of the Northern Resident Orcas over 22 years, and while we keep a respectful 200m distance on the water, they’ve been known to visit our shoreline to rub their bellies.

No promises, but plenty of magic! Learn more and book at www.greywolfexpeditions.com.
