Have a great shot taken within our geopark? Enter in the Earth Visual Odyssey Photo Contest!

As we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Global Geoparks Network , we are encouraging YOU to capture the timeless stories our planet, particularly our geopark, has to tell. The Earth Visual Odyssey photo contest, organized by the Global Geopark Network (GGN), is a tribute to the incredible bond between people and our planet’s geological wonders—and they want to see your unique perspective!

This contest just about rocks, fossils, or minerals. It’s about human stories told through Earth’s landscapes, because the geology of a place plays a major role in its history, culture, and identity.

Whether it’s The Dungeon at dusk, visiting Port Union's Fossil Site with your family, or the foraged ingredients that were made possible because of our soil, we would love for your to share your take on something special in our geopark.

This is a chance to be a part of a global celebration! Learn more here: https://ggn20anniversary.com/earth-visual-odyssey

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

The cultural connections between Newfoundland & Labrador and Ireland are well known but there are many geological similarities as well!

Both regions were heavily influenced by glaciation during the last Ice Age. Glacial features such as erratic boulders can be found in both Ireland and the Bonavista Peninsula, providing evidence of past glacial activity.

Ireland and the Bonavista Peninsula both have rugged coastlines characterized by high cliffs formed by the erosion of sedimentary rock layers. These cliffs offer spectacular views and are often composed of similar rock types!

Both places have areas of peat bog, formed from the accumulation of organic matter in waterlogged conditions over thousands of years. Peat bogs are important ecological and geological features, providing insights into past environmental conditions and serving as records of environmental change.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day from the Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark! Particular greetings of well wishes to our fellow UNESCO Global Geoparks in Ireland: Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark, Copper Coast Geopark, and The Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark.
