Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

The cultural connections between Newfoundland & Labrador and Ireland are well known but there are many geological similarities as well!

Both regions were heavily influenced by glaciation during the last Ice Age. Glacial features such as erratic boulders can be found in both Ireland and the Bonavista Peninsula, providing evidence of past glacial activity.

Ireland and the Bonavista Peninsula both have rugged coastlines characterized by high cliffs formed by the erosion of sedimentary rock layers. These cliffs offer spectacular views and are often composed of similar rock types!

Both places have areas of peat bog, formed from the accumulation of organic matter in waterlogged conditions over thousands of years. Peat bogs are important ecological and geological features, providing insights into past environmental conditions and serving as records of environmental change.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day from the Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark! Particular greetings of well wishes to our fellow UNESCO Global Geoparks in Ireland: Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark, Copper Coast Geopark, and The Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark.

It is believed that a French and Iberian summer base existed in Keels before 1600. An English presence has certainly been established since 1660. Regardless of who came and when, settlers were drawn to Keels for its lucrative cod fishery rather than its soil quality. This drone shot reveals the dramatic landscape characterized by exposed bedrock, common in eastern Newfoundland. Despite its scenic beauty, shallow soil prevented any chance of an agriculture industry in this community. In the 18th and 19th centuries, households typically managed less than half an acre of land, cultivating vegetables solely for personal consumption.

Check out this great read from MUN Folklore Department about the history of this community within our geopark! bit.ly/Keels

The next time you're in the Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark, be sure to schedule a stop in this community too see one of our key geosites, the Devil's Footprints.
