The Open Work Permit (OWP) program for foreign workers with a support letter from a province or territory is currently closed to new applicants. This program, which allowed eligible foreign workers in Alberta, Manitoba, and Yukon to obtain an open work permit valid for up to two years, required a support letter from the respective province or territory. As of February 12, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has indicated that this program is no longer accepting new applications.

Important Notice: Temporary Pause on New Job Approval Forms (JAFs) Intake

Due to the federal government’s decision to reduce nomination allocations to the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) by 50 per cent in 2025, the intake of all new Job Approval Forms (JAFs) has been temporarily paused.

This decision is aimed at aligning with the updated federal immigration targets and ensuring that current applications are processed efficiently within the reduced allocation framework.

For additional information about this pause, including how it may affect current and future applications, please visit the official SINP website or contact SINP directly at [SINP contact information].

Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, has signaled his commitment to tightening measures against fraudulent asylum claims.

With Parliament currently prorogued, Miller is considering introducing a bill or implementing regulatory changes to expedite the process and minimize delays.

“I am prepared to introduce a bill in Parliament…” he stated, questioning why individuals who were ineligible for asylum upon arrival should be permitted to apply years later—unless there has been a significant change in their home country’s circumstances.

Canada to Remove 50-Point LMIA Advantage & Struggles with Asylum Reform

Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced that the 50-point LMIA advantage will be eliminated this spring, a move he can implement without Parliamentary approval.

However, major asylum reform remains stalled, as significant changes require Parliament’s consent. Miller revealed that his previous asylum reform attempt was blocked by all major opposition parties, leaving Canada’s system unchanged.

With over 260,000 pending refugee claims, delays in reform could have serious implications for border security and immigration processing.
