AC Basic fare changes are taking effect Jan 03 2025 onwards
If you book a Basic fare on Air Canada for flights within Canada, to the US or Southern destinations such as the Caribbean or Mexico, only a personal item such as a purse or camera bag will be free of charge. You will have to pay for and check in carry-ons as well as checked bags.
Fares such as Standard, which include a carry-on and Flex, which include a carry-on and a checked bag, are not affected by these changes and can be a better value even though the base fare will be higher.
Airlines worldwide have struggled with more passengers who want to avoid checked bag fees by bringing more carry ons. This slows down boarding and can delay takeoff.
Other airlines such as WestJet also have made the same changes to their Basic fares recently as well as other North American airlines.

Thinking of travelling to the UK? As of January 08, 2025 all travellers who do not need a visa, will need to apply for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) prior to their arrival. This new system will help to improve border security and make arrival quicker as your passport information will already be stored in the system. Cost is 10.00UK pounds and will allow multiple visits of 6 months or less to the UK. The ETA will be valid for two years or whenever the passport that it is attached to, expires, whichever comes first. Processing of applications will generally take three business days so it is recommended that you apply at least two weeks before a trip to the UK.

Did you know? TICO - the Travel Industry Council of Ontario - has a compensation fund which protects Ontario consumers and the money they pay for travel services.

With the recent closure and ceasing of operations of Canada Jetlines it is a good time to remind travellers about the Ontario Compensation Fund. The coverage protects the money that you had paid for travel if a travel service closes and you do not receive the travel services you have paid for and will not be receiving a refund.

The extra need to know - if you book airfare with a registered TICO agency you have this coverage, if you book directly with the airline you do not. One of many good reasons to book with a travel agent even if it is just a simple airfare.
