The best place to find migrating songbirds in the spring is in the woods near the lighthouse- Presqu’ile Point!

Where else can you find the birds at Presqu’ile? Check out this map, which is from the birding brochure on our website: https://bit.ly/35Uf527

It's and we have some water-related trivia questions for you! Tell us your answers in the comments.

1. What is the name of the bay on the east side of the Presqu'ile peninsula? (Nope, it's not called Brighton bay!)
2. What plant growing in Presqu'ile's marsh is known to remove excess nutrients and pollution from water?
3. What is the name of the landform that has developed at Presqu'ile due to the currents of Lake Ontario, which continue to deposit sand on the beach. (This landform is a connection formed between an island and the mainland.)

Another amazing aerial shot of Presqu'ile!

In this photo, we are looking west, with the lighthouse at the bottom left of the photo, Owen Point at the top left, and the town of Colborne at the top middle. The road on the right side of the peninsula is the residential road, lined with homes and cottages. This strip of land along the north shore of the peninsula is part of the Municipality of Brighton.

The large piece of land at the bottom left of the photo was once an island made of limestone bedrock, but became attached to the mainland by the build up of a sandspit. This portion of the park is mostly covered by mixed forest.

Due to the influence of the lake, this forest tends to have a cooler than normal microclimate, and a tendency toward moist conditions due to poor drainage.

The cool, humid microclimate of Presqu'ile is reflected in the interesting forest plants found here. For example Striped Maple is unusually common at Presqu'ile. This species is rare locally and is more typical of the southern Canadian Shield around Algonquin Park.

Clearing of the land for farming and other human activities has resulted in a variety of forest ages and successional stages at Presqu'ile. Much of the forest which remains is fairly mature, exceeding 75 years of age.

The dark patches of trees are plantations of native and non-native coniferous trees, planted by previous park management for a variety of reasons. Some of the trees were planted to provide protection from the winds while others were planted in an attempt to reforest the park.

These dense plantations are virtually lifeless in comparison with nearby natural forest. Little sunlight reaches the ground and so there is essentially no understory vegetation. The lack of understory and plant diversity produced by rows of even aged trees mean that only a few bird and mammal species find the plantations to be attractive habitat.

Overall, Presqu'ile is a small but very biodiverse park, with 7 naturally occurring habitats that are home to an abundance of flora and fauna. You can learn more about the nature of Presqu'ile on the Friends of Presqu'ile website (https://bit.ly/3zWFQzI) or by visiting Presqu'ile's Nature Centre, open daily in July and August.

Thanks to Eye In The Sky Photography we have some new aerial photos of the Presqu'ile peninsula! It's been a long time since we've had them done - the one on our website is from 1991. These were needed for a soon-to-be-revealed project in the park!

Aerial photos remind us of Presqu'ile's rare tombolo formation - an island (southern part of the park) attached to the mainland by a spit of sand. The sand portion grows wider each year as water currents deposit sand on our beach. Read more about that process on our website: https://bit.ly/3mWFYYb

The forest "fingers" that reach into the marsh are unique as well.

What do you notice?

More birds were returning on schedule this week, but as in the past few weeks, we have yet to see a big push in terms of numbers. A few rarities spiced up the birding, although nothing in the class of last week’s Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. Most waterfowl that aren’t going to breed here have moved on, with the exception of Long-tailed Ducks which are still common far offshore when calm conditions allow them to be seen. Shorebirds are trickling in but we are still awaiting the first big push. Lots of first-of-year (FOY) songbirds came in.

An even better view is from Lighthouse Point cottage located at Salt Point.. just up from the Government Dock.

It's that time again!

This photo taken yesterday, shows just a snapshot of some of the hundreds of waterfowl that are currently feeding and resting in Presqu'ile Bay.

Birdwatchers can expect to find over 15 species of ducks, geese and swans with more birds arriving every day. Right now, the ice edge is still far away and so binoculars, or a spotting scope are needed. The best views are currently from the Government Dock which is a small municipal park along the residential road in the park.

In a couple short weeks, the ice edge should be close to the Calf Pasture area allowing new and experienced birdwatchers amazing views of this special event.

We are also bringing back a modified version of our annual Waterfowl Weekend on March 19th and 20th. Stay tuned for more details!
