"A Caterpillar-ectomy"?
"A Caterpillar-ectomy"? We did around a dozen successful 'caterpillar-ectomies' today. We presently have a lot of Monarch Butterfly Larvae on our Swamp Milkweed plants in our gardens, but also on some of the container-grown Swamp Milkweed plants in our production and retail areas of our nursery. When we bring pots of Swamp Milkweed up to our retail nursery we inspect them for Monarch Butterfly Larvae. We also check the plantts in the retail nursery periodically; plus we inspect them before we load them onto the truck to take to the Truro Farmers' Market. Although the larvae seem to hold onto the leaves quite securely; we are always worried that they might end up falling off, or getting knocked off during handling. Sometimes the larva is on a leaf that is precariously dangling because it ate away much of the leaf attachment area. Hence the 'Caterpillar-ectomy'. We remove the leaves with the larvae on them, and re-locate them to leaves on plants in our gardens. We always check them half an hour later to make certain they haven't fallen off their new 'home'. AND YES; WE HAVE LOTS OF POTS OF SWAMP MILKWEED STILL AVAILABLE!
SOME DAYS WE ALL NEED A LIFT UP!
SOME DAYS WE ALL NEED A LIFT UP! Flynn is a 4 month old Pygmy goat and he loves apple leaves; preferably right off the tree. NOTE OUR AUGUST NURSERY HOURS: Open on Fridays only, from 12noon to 4pm. We are also at the Truro Farmers' Market on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm.
Irrigating The Perennial Production Nursery Early This Morning
Irrigating The Perennial Production Nursery Early This Morning - Our perennial production areas are irrigated with sprinklers whereas our retail areas are hand/hose watered. For the sprinkler irrigated areas we pump from 3 ponds. On dry years we are usually pumping from the 3rd pond by the 1st of August; however, this year all 3 ponds are mostly full.
GONNA BE ANOTHER PLEASANTLY WARM DAY; IF YOU ARE A PLANT WITH LOTS OF WATER!
GONNA BE ANOTHER PLEASANTLY WARM DAY; IF YOU ARE A PLANT WITH LOTS OF WATER! (WE LOVE OUR IRRIGATION SYSTEM) - Our irrigation system is comprised of 3 ponds, one drilled well, 4 pumps, over 1km of pipes and hoses, 2 dozen valves, and sprinklers galore. We can sprinkler and hose water our total production and retail areas in about 2 hours.
POTTED HERBS AND SALAD GREENS
GOSH, DARN; HOT DIGGITY DOG! DO WE HAVE A GOOD SUPPLY OF POTTED HERBS AND SALAD GREENS AVAILABLE THIS WEEK; OR NOT? I guess we do.... And speaking of hot; it's so warm and sunny here today, I can see and hear the basil growing. OPEN TODAY - 12noon to 4pm.

AH; SUMMER AT HILLENDALE PERENNIALS! - Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly feeding on 'Sensation' Lilac.
AH; SUMMER AT HILLENDALE PERENNIALS! (Not today but......) - Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly feeding on 'Sensation' Lilac. Nectar plant species for the adult butterflies include: swamp milkweed, Joe-pye weed, New York ironweed, and tall garden phlox, in addition to lilac. The caterpillers feed on various species of poplar, willow, cherry and ash. 'Sensation' can arguably be considered one of the most striking of the many, many lilac cultivars in existance. This cultivar is readily available at a lot of ornamental plant nurseries and garden centres. We don't produce shrubs; hence we don't carry it. We do, however, produce swamp milkweed, Joe-pye weed, and New York ironweed.
Breakfast at Hillendale Perennias
Breakfast at Hillendale Perennias - Each morning during the Winter approxemately 3 dozen, or so, Blue Jays drop by for breakfast (peanuts). They typically arrive about half an hour after sunrise. If I whistle before that time, they call back to me from the ravine where they overnight, and soon show up. If they are not fed their peanuts right away, some will sit on the tree branches next to the house and peer into our solarium windows; (impatiently) waiting for breakfast. If they don't get enough peanuts (in their opinion), they sometimes will follow me around the farm during the morning, shreeking at me. (NOTE: The raw dried in-the-shell peanuts are non-roasted and un-salted.)
Holiday Market at the TFM!
Yesterday's Truro Farmers' Market's Holiday Market was the busiest that we have ever seen it. Our Christmas Wreaths and most of our Christmas Planters were gone within an hour. We are now sold out (for the season) of Christmas Wreaths, Mixed DIY Bunches of 'Greenery', Bunches of Red-twig Dogwood, and most of our Christmas Drop Swags. At TODAY'S TRURO FARMERS' MARKET we will have Christmas Planters available along with a few Christmas Drop Swags, plus some of our Christmas-decorated Rustic Wooden Garden Deer.

This years HOLIDAY MARKET at the Truro Farmers' Market is this Friday, November 17 from 4 to 8pm! VIDEO - Hillendale Perennials' setup last year on Friday, November 18 around 3pm. We like to be set up early, in order to chillax for an hour before things get busy.
A GREAT INVESTMENT!
A GREAT INVESTMENT! We had 1500 daffodil bulbs to plant and I wasn't looking forward to doing the job with a shovel so we invested ($75+/-) in a Lee Valley Garden Auger. Time to plant 1500 bulbs? 7 hours! (That's about 15 seconds per bulb.)
WHAT A DIFFERENCE 40 HOURS CAN MAKE!
WHAT A DIFFERENCE 40 HOURS CAN MAKE! On Saturday it was 26C and today it snowed here at Hillendale Perennials. I guess that it is now time to put away the BBQ, and start seriously thinking about Christmas. (Actually, we started harvesting some of our greenery: balsam fir, white pine, and Austrian pine, for our Christmas wreaths, drop swags, and planters, a few days ago.)

INTRODUCING CRISPY; THE YOUNGEST MEMBER OF OUR COMPOST PRODUCTION TEAM & HILLENDALE PERENNIALS' NEW COMPANY SPOKESGOAT. In case you don't understand African Pygmy Goat Lingo; I will translate what Crispy is saying: "Contrary to rumours, Hillendale Perennials' Facebook Manager has not been abducted by aliens (since he has not posted anything for over a month). He simply took a holiday from social media, in order to concentrate on getting ready for Hillendale Perennials' 2023 Christmas Products' Season and to plan and prepare for our 2024 Spring and Summer Production and Marketing."

WHY THE HURRY? Black Swallowtail Butterfly Larva on its way to find a place to pupate.
WHY THE HURRY? Black Swallowtail Butterfly Larva on its way to find a place to pupate. This larva, along with 7 others, have been feeding on an older pot of parsley which I kept when I noticed them (at their first instar stage) about 3-4 weeks ago. They have now reached their 5th instar stage, which is when they 'take off' to find a place to pupate. Over the last few days 4 have disappeared; I assume to pupate. Today, when I was watering the plant, I luckily noticed this one moving quickly away from the pot of parsley.
IT'S A SUNNY SUNFLOWER DAY AT HILLENDALE PERENNIALS
