BLANKET TRAVEL ADVISORY LIFTED - Know before you go

The long awaited news that the federal government had lifted its blanket non-essential travel advisory has opened up new possibilities for Canadians aching to travel for leisure or to see family.

-Since quietly lifting the advisory last week, Global Affairs Canada has returned to its prior system for categorizing advisories for various destinations based on safety and security risk - splitting them into four levels: Exercise Normal Security Precautions; Exercise a High Degree of Caution; Avoid Non-Essential Travel; and Avoid All Travel.

-There is currently an advisory in place recommending against all cruise travel. The advisory cites the risk of quarantine if there's an outbreak on board, and that Canadian consular services may be restricted by local authorities.

-If you are planning a trip, officials recommend checking the Travel Advice and Advisories page at travel.gc.ca when you're booking your travel plans and then again shortly before you are due to leave to ensure the situation hasn't changed at your chosen destination.

-It was created by the International Air Transport Association and UN World Tourism Organization to provide a one-stop-shop for travellers seeking information on COVID-19 indicators including infection rates, positivity rates, and vaccination roll out by destination/country.

-The free online tool also details air travel regulations, including test and quarantine requirements, as well as destination measures, including general health and safety requirements like the use of face masks, transit through a country, curfew, or regulations related to restaurants and attractions, provided by national tourism organizations.

The Cuba Tourist Board has posted an update regarding Cuba’s entry requirements for Canadian travellers. According to the guidance, Canadians travelling on direct flights between Canada and Cuba do not need to complete a PCR test before travelling.
