Location – Cockscomb Basin Forest Reserve, Belize

We spent a good 3 hours hiking up and down this river. I'm glad the only wildlife we saw were a few birds. The foliage from the river was absolutely amazing and the crystal-clear water was unbelievable. Unfortunaly no treasures either.
-
I highly recommend visiting the national reserve, although you should probably book a guided tour with the park.

Meet a good Belizean friend of mind Garbo. We share the same passion for adventure and over the past 8 years we’ve done some serious adventuring around Belize. At this particular point in time, we both had GOLD fever and bad!
-
We planned for months and purchased all the right equipment for gold prospecting, we had big plans! This river hike was one of first on the trip and we decided to go to Cockcomb Basin, the national Jaguar sanctuary.
-
Needless to say, I felt like a fresh white meat meal for a big hungry cat. It’s a good thing my guides were so relaxed, but the adrenaline was pumping…. I was hooked.

You never know who you’re going to meet traveling.

I was taking a nap on the beach and got woken up by this cute little beach runner. He was laying right next to me like I was his owner. I decided to adopt his cool temperament, copy his pose and snap
a pic. He had a collar so I was a little confused on who’s dog it was!? He ended up chilling with me for about an hour and ran off. Must have liked my vibes, It’s the little things 😊

Sometimes all you need is a little beach and ocean… oh and Coronas and Tacos, those help too!

I would recommend going to Sihanoukville if you in Cambodia, but I wouldn’t recommend going to Cambodia to visit Sihanoukville.
-
If you find yourself there, grab a Real Canadian Caesar and the beach bar Blame Canada. Yes, with Clamato!
-
After about 6 Ceasars, wander to "CHILL TATTOO" and get some fresh ink! I mean, why not, you are in Cambodia.!? I don't recommend getting one on the top of your foot, it hurt! No Pain, No Gain. I got my company logo stamped, and I still operate that business 10 years later.

Let’s leave the big city and head to the coast, Sihanoukville. It’s a good 5 hour's bus ride from Phnom Penh. Never a dull moment, the converted school bus was packed full of mostly locals and us. After noticing the bus didn’t stop driving much on the trip, I emptied my system of fluids at the first stop. Apparently, not everybody had that same idea….
-
A good 3 hours into the scorching and bumpy bus trip, the lady directly behind me, and her two daughters, about 4-6 years old, started making a commotion. I couldn’t understand what was happening, as I didn’t understand the language. A couple of minutes later, I looked behind me and this child is fully squatted in the middle of the aisle over a plastic bag her Mom had placed out for her to use as a toilet. I couldn't believe what I was seeing!! I remember this overbearing smell of sh*t; she was letting it all out! I’m pretty sure I was in shock.

Things went from bad to worse, we managed to hit a jump at precisely the wrong time and there she went right into her excrement. All hell broke loose at this point as tears and screams started rolling. The bus came to a stop, and I was the first one off and spent the next 10 minutes vomiting my guts out! I will never forget the last 60min of that bus trip.
-
The laidback vibe, our accommodations, and the endless white sand beaches, almost made up for travel in. I spent 10 days in Sihanoukville, enjoying the unique energy this place provides.
-
Needless to say, I got a private shuttle back to the airport.

Timbo the Tuk Tuk drive is what we call him. He was referred to me by a friend that had recently traveled to Phonm Phen, Cambodia and had nothing but good things to say. I’m glad I took his advice.

Timbo was great, and we stayed in touch for a few years after. He gave us the whole Cambodian experience, that’s for sure. In his pride and joy, he toured us around to all the best local sites and showed us where we should stay. Believe it or not, my partner and I showed up without a place booked! Oh, the good old days…

Everybody seemed to know Timbo, or maybe he just kept bringing tourists to the same places, it made us feel pretty important and safe either way. He definitely had connections in the Cambodian Military! I'll have to check the policies on shooting rocket launchers and throwing grenades.
-
He sure showed me a good time. Meet Timbo the Tuk Tuk driver.

Pro tip - Always bring flags or items to give away. The joy is so worth it.

Alright! Before we dive into Adventures by Al Cambodia Series, I have a confession to make…
-
Out of all the places on the planet, I’ve never seen humans utilize roads this way. I was in Cambodia for three weeks and saw 4 accidents and not small ones! Back in 2015 road safety was nonexistent in Cambodia, and neither were streetlights!
It was a total free-for-all! I’m glad I linked up with a driver/tour guide before landing. I was still scared sh*tless! After seeing a few accidents and how the traffic flowed in these streets, I was on-edge with my phone in hand.
Of course, ready as always, I got live-in-motion shots of these poor fellow kissing concrete, and then we just about ran him over… I can’t make this up; see for yourself.

This is a prequel and opener to the crazy happenings in Cambodia!!

Let’s get out of the jungle and into the ocean. Don’t worry, we're not far and sticking to Belize. I absolutely love Belize, and it holds a special place in my heart; you’ll find out why.

I’m spinning time back 7 years, to 2015, my first-ever dive in Belize's crystal clear blue waters. It was amazing. An ocean shelf at about 60km offshore makes water shallow inward, littering the ocean with little keys, islands, mangroves, marine life and crystal blue water. It has holds the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world, and did I mention the infamous blue hole! It’s a tropical paradise.

This will be a little teaser to the dive to come. I wonder, if I were to go back and do this exact dive, what would things look like in 2022?
-
I’ve done multiple dives with Splash Dives, and I have nothing but great things to say about their staff, equipment, and boats.

Tired, but I scored an awesome breakfast and 2 beers for the road. Today my day is half full, not empty. After a good chat with Mister British, I welcomed some local advice and off I go on the next adventure.
-
Probably on one of favorite things to do is water fall hunting and gold prospecting, and that’s exactly what I was about to do. I every blown away by the rivers in Belize, specifically the crystal clear water and massive rock formations and of course the breath taking waterfalls.
-
No tangible treasures, besides unforgettable memories, and experiences. I decided it was time to head back to civilization, and get a nice Air BNB with walls…
