🥁🥁 Your guide for the Iceline Trail trek July 22-24 is Sonja Langejans! 🤩
Here’s a short bio to serve as presentation.

I will add that Sonja is also a Mom, an entrepreneur and woman of many talents with always a project on the go AND she has a Great sense of humour so you are promised lots of laughs when on the trail in her care! 😃

✨Growing up in rural Alberta, I spent my childhood exploring the foothills west of Sundre, sparking a lifelong passion for the outdoors and nature.

✨Now, living on the doorstep of the Canadian Rockies, I share that passion by guiding others through the wild—whether it’s their first time in the mountains or a multi-day backpacking trip.

✨I’ve trekked legendary trails like the Inca Trail in Peru and the Chilkoot, as well as explored remote lakes and rivers. I’m passionate about helping others explore, navigate, and connect with the outdoors.

See you on the trails! ✨

🥁🥁Meet Shannon, our CANSI Level 1 cross-country instructor!

🏔️ Shannon has been adventuring in the Canadian Rockies and abroad for over 30 years. While growing up in Calgary, she was exposed to camping and skiing as an energetic youth and later pursued hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, mountaineering, back-country skiing and sea kayaking.

🗺️ With her Geography degree and passion for the natural world, Shannon has spent her professional life working in:
- environmental education,
- outdoor tourism and
- conservation.

She has worked with:
- Parks Canada,
- Alberta Parks,
- Knight Inlet Lodge,
- The Alpine Club of Canada and
- the City of Calgary.

🏔️She currently resides in Calgary, with the mountains in her backyard, and she has lived and worked in Canmore, Banff and in British Columbia.

❄️ As a cross-country skiing instructor, Shannon brings a fun, adventurous flair to her ski sessions while sharing tips and movement techniques to empower beginner and intermediate skiers alike. She connects with skiers of all ages and abilities and is dedicated to helping them improve and enjoy the sport.

❄️ Shannon simply loves getting outside, and cross-country skiing is her favourite way to share the peace and beauty of the winter with others, and to help them build the confidence to get out on their own.

🗺️ Shannon’s love for travelling and exploring has taken her around the world to SE Asia, Australia, Europe, South and Central America, Mexico and throughout the USA. When Shannon travels, she often finds herself hiking above tree line and has taken herself to the summits of Cerro Chirripo in Costa Rica and Aconcagua in Argentina as well as high passes in the Himalayas, Andes and Swiss Alps.

🏔️Closer to home, she loves to organize backpacking and ski trips to backcountry huts and lodges and is usually planning an adventure or two.

📣 NEWS: We have a new member in our team of women hiking / trekking guides: Sara McLean! 🥳

🎒 Sara will be our West Coast Trail Lead guide this summer. You will be in great hands as she has guided it 5 times already!

🎒 Sara and I shared the guiding of a group of 7 in July 2022 and I saw first hand how much dedication and care she has for guests. And this past summer again. Sara is a professional at what she does; the safety and wellbeing of each guest is her first and foremost priority.

🎒 Sara is an ACMG Hiking Guide living in Canmore. She grew up in Calgary and competed in cross-country skiing until she was 20.

After her racing career, she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Calgary. During this time, she also became more interested in remote backpacking trips in the Rockies.

She got her Apprentice Hiking Guide certification in 2021 and completed her Hiking Guide Exam in 2023.

Outside of guiding, Sara’s summer hobbies include trail running, scrambling, and rock climbing. In the winter she works as a ski patroller – the perfect combo of seasonal jobs!

🎒Pictures of Sara: cooking.. as yes we guides cook for our guests on the trail 🥘 🧑‍🍳 and Sara paying close attention to guests footsteps as they cross a cold rushing Rockies stream, ready to catch or lend an arm.

🏋️‍♀️🏋️‍♀️Alright SM world, I almost feel bad not having posted much lately but I had my reasons.☺️ I finally - after postponing for at least 4 years - finally braced myself and had bunion surgery on my 2nd foot. It was needed, I assure you.

First foot was done 10 years ago.. yes very successfully! But myy the recovery was long.. and this is what I dreaded.

For a physically active person like me, it’s never the right time to be forced to spend 6-8 weeks ++ recovering sigh..

It’s not over, I’m 3 weeks post-surgery only but the big difference from 10 years ago is that I was told by the hospital nurse I could weight bear when in the air cast.. so I did (but on the heel and side only and for exercising only) and that allowed me to Exercise and myyy that feels good compared to almost becoming one with the couch! (like for the previous foot)

🏋️‍♀️ So this post to say: I’m excited to start 2025 with TWO straight feet!! 🙌🏽🥳

and also excited I was born with only 2🦶🦶😅 🩼🩼🧊🧊🏋️‍♀️🏋️‍♀️🛋️🛋️

Pic.3: the many drugs I had to take the first 4-5 days because Dr breaks your foot to realign it. 😬😳😬

I promise the next post won’t be about me but about waaayy more interesting things planned for 2025! 🙌🏽😅

📆 I’m so glad my Strava account (& connected Coros watch app) gives me a yearly recap - i love stats!! - so I realize of how sportively active my year 2024 was and how thankful I can be for the gift of health & moving❣️❣️
these comments are definitely encouraging:
- QOM Queen of the mountain 11x & throne for me 👸 😂
- outdid 85% of the Strava community.. bla bla where did it go find this really🤔🤣

It unfortunately doesn’t account for:
- times I forget or don’t feel like logging a workout (rare but can happen)
- times I train indoors with the fantastic BODi program (mainly during winter)
- times I indoor climb
- times I play pickleball with friends

🤩 Also love that Google Photos also spared me the work & gave me a summary of my Most captured colours and smiles: 221!!! See my stories 🤩

Yay to a great year 2024 - highs AND lows included! - and I wish you a Happy but ESPECIALLY Healthy & Active year 2025❣️🥂

Then we went to Horseshoe Bend with my new friend.. a short walk to a stunning view of another amazing geological feature! A busy touristy place yet worth stopping. 👍🏽

Winter has set in our area but I felt like reminiscing of the warmth and colours of that beautiful desert area and sharing those pictures. 🙂

🏜️Run Day 3 with early October: Antelope Canyon 🤩 14 mi / 22.5 k with 1,214 ft / 370 m elev.gain. 70% of the trail was unpacked sand 😮‍💨 I had to tell my brain: ok sand kinda sucks so pick a speed that works and just stick to it, even if it feels slow and inefficient, you’re moving so don’t stop.

🏜️ This course Highlights: walking, squeezing oneself and climbing in a slot canyon.. crazy! You look up and you’re in this super tight space! You try to look ahead and it’s curved so you can’t see a thing and every time you go around the next curve you get a surprise. Amazing! I highly recommend.

Highlights were also indigenous people (Indians as they to be called down south) on course kindly letting us run on their land. Oh and the blue sky, red rocks & red canyons.. Utah is so photogenic!

🏜️ 3rd half marathon in 3 days 😳😅 and that again I got 2nd in my age category 😅🥳 (2/50) interesting to know that whatever I do for fitness works!

🏜️Oh did I mention the tablespoon of sand I had in each sock at the end? I never stopped to do anything about it, I didn’t want to loose time on the run. If you haven’t run with sand in your socks in life yet, I recommend you try.. it’s character building 🤣

🏜️Run Day 2 with Vacation Races: Zion 🤩 10 mi / 16.5 k with 574 ft / 175 m elev.gain of single trail along the canyon ridge at sunrise 🌅 👌🏽😍

🏜️ It was quite rocky (I don’t mind rocks 😅) with low cactuses ready to catch your ankles🌵so I was very focused and barely took any pictures. Distance felt like a breeze compared to previous day. 😆
‘Sunny’ Suzanne Stroeerevening presentation by was very inspiring. I mean who swims accross the Colorado river alone at night (the 2nd time) to do a wilderness Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim 😳👍🏽
And Yes whatever you let your mind believe - for success or not on a run or adventure or life! - it will be it.

🏜️ side note, I got 2nd in my age category that day 🙌🏽🥳 (2/50) Pas mal pour un vieux cheval 🐎 🐴 no podium, no prizes, just interesting to know where I place 🙂
