We might have had a bit of a warm week here in Calgary, but it’s time to start thinking of winterizing your irrigation system!

As fun as winter can be in Calgary, we deal with freezing cold temperatures that last almost half the year.

For this very reason, you want to make sure that your irrigation system is winterized before the first freeze every year. The first photo is of black henbane, a poisonous w**d we've been seeing around Calgary a lot lately.

We can spray the henbane to get rid of it, but it's better to just put on gloves, pull it out, and throw it in your black bin – as well as your gloves!

Star jelly? Star slime?? Shooting star remnants? Witches butter?

It might sound like fantasy, but these are some older names from days gone by for a cyanobacteria called Nostoc.

This fascinating cyanobacteria can be found in various environments, from lawns to rocky surfaces. When dry, it appears as a dark, flaky crust. But add a little water, and watch the magic happen! Nostoc transforms into a jelly-like substance, earning it those whimsical nicknames.

We are truly in the thick of lawncare season!

It’s been a tough season for the Landscape and Irrigation industries in Calgary and Area and not getting any easier! We share the same frustration and concerns as our friends at Fiddler's Green Landscaping and have been thankful for all of the work the Canadian Prairie Chapter of the Irrigation Association has been doing to advocate on behalf of the Irrigation and Landscape industries this season!

Calgary landscape companies and their grass providers are getting fed up with water restrictions, saying the impact feels unfair. Carlene Sorensen reports.

Aphids are among us these days in Calgary! 🪳

It’s likely you’ve seen that sticky goop on your car or walkway lately – well, that’s aphid excrement referred to as “honeydew.” Very interestingly, multiple generations of aphids can grow within just a few weeks, as females can reproduce without mating in the summer months.

Despite it’s sweet name, honeydew is anything but pleasant – and to make matters even more gross – a fungus then grows on this goo! Yuck!

According to The City of Calgary website, this goo is easily removed by washing off the affected location with soap and water.

You can also help mitigate the issue by spraying the middle of your plants (this is where the aphids typically lie) and trying to introduce natural predators like ladybugs into your garden.

But don’t worry, as this dry, hot spell eases – so will the aphids!
