"The job is far from complete...We are still thinking in a traditional lens of what disability looks like in the '80s and '90s. That's where and how we've ended up where we are." - Zachary Weeks

Alberta's disability advocate, Greg McMeekin, is calling on the provincial government to join nearly every other Canadian province and pass an accessibility act.

A UN committee has released a critical review of Canada’s adherence to the CRPD.

Canada has been directed to repeal Track 2 MAiD, raise the “woefully inadequate” Canada Disability Benefit, and address regional disparities.

The committee’s language is firm. There is no wiggle room. Canada may “be deemed against the [CRPD]” for not realizing the right to decide.

Regarding MAiD, it names Track 2 MAiD as being ableist.

For more on MAiD in Canada, see our new infographic, responding to Health Canada’s 5th Annual Report on MAiD.

Specific to intellectual disability, the committee cites persistent discrimination and exclusion, over-representation in the criminal justice system, a lack of accessible information, ableism in healthcare, and barriers to voting.

We'd be remiss to not feature these important recommendations as well, which advance our strategic priority work:

- Establish a national inclusive education action plan

- Develop a strategy with specific timelines to transition sheltered workshops to inclusive employment opportunities

- Implement a coordinated deinstitutionalization strategy across federal, provincial, and territorial governments with clear timelines and targets

The UN committee calls for urgent action.

Inclusion Canada is more than ready to collaborate with government and hold Canada accountable to delivering on our commitments under international law.
