.steele.75 and I on hike through the Lost Coast in Northern California.

Thanks for taking photos bud, happy memories.

Wild what an old photo can bring back in terms of the memories of that place in time but also beyond. I wore that fishhook necklace for such a long time, bought it in Australia from a carver on the coast, I can remember that experience vividly.

The other item is that Yak wool hoodie that I bought in Dharmashala, India. The first time I saw a Yak up there I couldn’t believe it was really, they look like mythical creatures. Can confirm that their wool is super warm.

People often ask, in a bewildered kind of way, how a prairie kid ended up with a sailboat on the Pacific Ocean, well it all really started with a small sailboat in the prairies!

Me and Popsi cola, early 1990’s at Candle Lake, Saskatchewan…home away from home.

I can vividly remember the first time we went out in what I thought was way too much much wind and waves…it was terrifying and felt like a matter of life death. I guess that feeling wasn’t far off, and have often had that same feeling more recently, whether it’s being 100’s of mikes off shore from land or docking a boat in a tight spot, but ultimately with age and experience it feels more under my control and way more fun!

We went to Cuba over Christmas for 2 weeks, half in Varadero and half in Havana. It was a wild ride, and not just on that Hobie Cat, we had some bad luck…but mostly the economy in that country is really struggling. Absolutely beautiful; music, old cars, granite architecture, and amazing people, but extremely hard to get access to every day things we take for granted in Canada. Especially things like cash, gasoline and groceries…imagine life without those essentials?!? Never mind pharmaceuticals, tools and parts…I have no idea how the Cubans have kept those cars running but it is a huge testament to their perseverance!

The black and white photo of the early 50’s Pontiac had the same engine had Orca 3!! We were taking it out to this really cool club called The Cuban Art Factory in Havana and I thought it sound familiar…a Perkins diesel engine!

Recently, the Covid Era and the Russian war on top of the trade embargo has put a lot of pressure on the locals. Every single person I asked wanted to leave as quick as possible, a complicated and expensive undertaking for them.

If you go, get out of the all inclusive tourist bubble in Varadero and bring lots of USD, things to donate, and a sense of adventure!

What an incredible 2 year relationship anniversary and 1 year living aboard anniversary!!!

Previous owner of Orca 3 dropped off the blueprints somewhat recently and Jayme showed me them, then she hid them. Meanwhile she was framing them herself with a recycled frame.

We don’t currently have a wall big enough to hang it on the boat, but we may someday 😅

Thanks love ❤️

Lots of help from these two on a complete battery replacement on Orca yesterday! Thank you ❤️

Our house bank and starter bank were dead, preventing us from spending any time away from shore power and potentially not being able to start the old Perkins marine diesel engine. Also found a leak from some of the wet cell lead acid batteries, luckily they were in a box!!

Added a lot of amp hours to the system, switched from 6V lead acid wired in series to 12V AGM wired in parallel, cleaned up a lot of corroded terminals and trying to simplify/reduce the wiring, going to take more work but that was a huge first step for the boat and me. I didn’t know much about electrical before I started working at Skookum a year ago, have learned a lot and really liking that type of work…paid off huge at home ⛵️

and I are going off grid to test out the system very soon 🥳

Stern tie with in Smugglers Cove, Sunshine Coast.

One of favourite anchorages in the Salish Sea, tiny entrance just wider then a boat opens up into multiple football field and tennis court sized pockets of water, surrounded by cliffs and trees.

Being such a tight spot, you need to drop your anchor near the centre of the body of water and pull your boat towards the shore with a stern line. There are plenty of strategically placed eyes and chain to attach you’re stern line. This keeps your boat fixed in a single position, rather than swinging around you’re anchor from the current and wind. This allows for a lot more boats to enjoy the space together.

Introducing Captain Pria!

We met on Granville Island at Skookum Yacht Services and I casually mentioned that I might be looking for help with Easy Goin.

I’m so happy she got back to me! Pria is extremely experienced in the marine field with maintenance/repairs and especially at sea.

She has been at the helm with False Creek Ferries for 5 years, ran tours on high speed Zodiacs for Sea Vancouver and a mate for Bluewater Adventures on a 68ft Ketch…last trip was up to Haida Gwaii 🤩

She will be running tours on Easy Goin when possible and hopefully filling in for me when I’m not available. That opens up the potential for day tours from Monday-Friday!

Famous Sailors Series!!

Despite sailing for over half a century, Albert Einstein wasn’t very good at it. According to his biographers, he would lose his direction, his mast would often fall down, and he frequently ran aground and had near collisions with other vessels.

Interestingly, Einstein didn’t mind the dangers of sailing even though he couldn’t swim!! In 1944, while sailing on Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks, Einstein's boat hit a rock and capsized. A rope entangled his leg, and he was trapped briefly underneath the sail, but he managed to find his way to the surface without panicking and was saved by a passing motorboat.

Those who knew Einstein claim that he always took a pencil and a pad of paper with him when he sailed, so that if he got stuck or if the wind died, he could write down his thoughts. Since he liked solitude and privacy, perhaps this was just another aspect of sailing that
appealed to Einstein. Perhaps even aspects of his famous Theory Of Relativity were formulated onboard a
sailboat.

What a legend!!

Jolitee, a 40 year old cold molded wood boat with a steel keel. What a fun boat to work on, she turned out beautiful!!

3 coats of bright green topside paint, a large keel repair and a few coats of red anti fouling bottom paint. Was a lot of work and an amazing learning opportunity at Skookum Yacht Services.

June 1st 2022!!!

First of the month is “Famous Sailors Series”. What a way to start with this man…who doesn’t love Morgan Freeman?!? One of those actors that not matter what role he plays you just want to sit down and talk with him. That soothing voice!

No surprise that I love that he is also a sailor, and he started before his Hollywood success. What a legend.

“If you live a life of make-believe,” Freeman once said, “your life is worth nothing until you do something that challenges your reality. And for me, sailing on the open sea is a real challenge, because it’s life or death.”
