Looking for a new hobby? Start your birding journey with the Caspian Tern! 🐦

The largest tern in the world, it’s known for its striking red bill and distinctive raspy call. Found near freshwater and saltwater, the Caspian Tern glides gracefully as it dives for fish and performs synchronized flights with its mate during nesting season.

Did you know? These nocturnal migrants can often be heard calling overhead on autumn nights. 🌌🎶

🌊 An incredibly rare and unforgettable sighting near Campbell River this season: a sea otter, carrying a river otter. 🦦

While these marine mammals may look endearing, they exhibit behaviors that remind us nature is as brutal as it is beautiful.

Sea otters are known for their hyper-aggressive mating culture, with males often forcing females into submission through biting and holding them underwater - sometimes fatally. Shockingly, they have also been documented engaging in violent behavior toward pups of their species and even young harbor seals, leading to severe injury or death.

These behaviors, though disturbing, are part of their natural instincts and survival strategies. They offer a complex, and sometimes harsh, window into the reality of wildlife.

12/11/2024

Tail slapping is one of the most fascinating and powerful behaviors observed in whales. This involves a whale lifting its massive tail out of the water and striking the surface with force, creating splashes and sounds that travel for hundreds of meters. But why do they do it?

Here’s what researchers think:

📣 Social Coordination: Tail slaps often happen before groups form or split, possibly helping whales communicate and organize.

🐾 Learning and Play: Young whales may imitate adults or engage in playful behavior, exploring their environment.

🍴 Feeding Technique: The loud noise might scare prey, like tiny crustaceans, into tighter groups, making it easier for whales to feast.

Have you seen a whale tail slap?
