After almost 2 months of ice climbing season it always seems funny to welcome the 1st day of winter! Even the Snowshoe Hare that lives in my yard has been white for a couple months! (Pic 4). Ice season has been a blast so far with lots of big ice routes, fun groups on courses and tons of mixed climbing too! I’m currently enjoying an awesome Ice Skills Week with a stoked crew of climbers! There are still spots left on my Jan and Feb Ice Skills Weeks if anyone is interested in kicking their skills up a few notches! Enjoy the holiday season and keep your picks in the ice!

I love this spot on Mt A2 at the Columbia Icefields! Wild views of multiple glaciers and big alpine walls! These guys certainly enjoyed it too on an ascent earlier this summer! This is a really fun peak we often climb on our 5 day Alpine Skills Courses each year.

Pics are a few rock climbing highlight from Mt Abraham, Mt Yamnuska, Ha Ling, Wasootch Tower and skills courses this summer. Thanks to everyone that joined me for trips this season and I hope to see you this winter here in ice climbers paradise!

Another awesome week of ice climbing in the Canadian Rockies! Had a great crew for a weekend Ice Skills Course and then Phillipe joined me for some classic multipitch routes! We started with Professor Falls, followed it up Moonlight and a very thin Snowline, then finished with Louise Falls (all to ourselves on a Saturday!). It’s been a great season so far and there are still over 2 months of ice climbing courses and ascents to come!

Enjoyed an awesome three days of climbing with this week! We started off with ascents of the classic Moonlight & 2Low4Zero climbs on day 1. For day 2 we tackled the much steeper Whiteman Falls (W6) and Redman Soars (M5+) which were both super fun climbs! On Thursday we had one more big day on the mega-classic Murchison Falls (W4+)!

Even during conditions where we have to avoid avalanche terrain there are no shortage of amazing routes like this too keep us busy in the Canadian Rockies! Good luck with you next adventures Francisco!

Had an action packed Ice Skills Week with an awesome group of 4 climbers from around North America! The level of enthusiasm was through the roof and it really showed as they picked up the skills rapidly! Steep pillars, mixed climbing, first leads, and of course awesome company were some of the highlights. Good luck with all your future climbs team!

Enjoyed a great five days of ice & mixed climbing with 4 climbers from Hong Kong last week! There rock climbing background really showed and we were able to quickly progress onto steeper routes. To finish up the trip we split into smaller groups for a couple days so everyone could enjoy some multipitch climbing on Moonlight and 2Low4Zero!

Up the famous pillar in Opal Creek with on Tuesday. So good! It had funky mushroom ice, a big overhang on great quality ice, a rad canyon, and straight up steepness to the top! Hadn’t done it in a few years but I’m sure I’ll be back many more times! Matt crushed it on his steepest ice route yet.

Awesome day of climbing Coire Dubh Integral on the weekend with Colin! In 20 years of climbing it I’ve never seen nearly so much ice on all the upper mixed pitches. Had at least a couple good (and lots of so-so) pick placements on every pitch! Most years there is zero ice on those pitches. Heads up to anyone looking to climb it that it probably makes it a bit harder overall and it’s much harder to find gear placements than usual. One of the things I love most about winter climbing is that you never know what to expect and the climbs are always changing!

The Shoulder Route on Mt Abraham with Simon was great way to end the summer alpine season! The stunning positions on this ridge combined with lots of climbing have long made it one of my favorites. When I first climbed it at age 19 in 2001 with Mike Adolph it was my biggest route yet and I remember feeling like I was “finally” breaking into hard alpine climbs! 20+ years later it would seem that climbers are finally finding out about this David Thompson Highway gem of a climb! Still has some loose rock and some very long runouts but it’s cleaning up nicely with a bit of traffic.

So proud of my favorite 5 year old alpinist! She did amazingly well on our recent trip up The Onion on the Wapta Icefields. Conditions were even good enough to use the glacier on the way up!
