Bye bye winter, hello spring summer. Don’t forget to pull your batteries out of your avalanche transceiver. Failing to do so may result in the batteries leaching corrosives chemicals which will result in a voided warranty and a non functional transceiver. Also, if you are climbing or scrambling peaks that have enough snow avalanche and the slopes you are travelling up or down or across have are steep enough to avalanche, consider carrying a UIAA stamped avalanche shovel and probe along with a transceiver so that you are searchable. #confidentlygo #mammutna #mammut #avalanche #avalanchesafety #avalanchecanada #caa #acmg #mountains #techtips #mountainequipment
Glacier season is here and the best way to manage glacier travel and crevasse hazard is by having the right equipment. Wearing a harness and using a rope to manage your risk is an imperative. The Mammut Zephyr Altitude harness and Mammut Glacier Cord 6.0 both weigh in at less than a kilo. Throw in a light progress capture, rope clamp, 5 or 5.5mm prussik along with an assortment of locking and non locking carabiners and you can move through glaciated terrain with you partners and manage your risk appropriately without weighing yourself down. If you don’t have glacier travel skills, have a peek at my link in the Bio. Oh, don’t forget to check the avalanche Canada website for up to date avalanche hazard forecasts for your local region. CanRock Mountain Guides site is there if you are need of a tailor made glacier and crevasse rescue course. #confidentlygo #mammutna #glaciertravel #mountainsafety #kananaskiscountry #crevasse #mountains #backcountryskiing #skimo #skimountaineering
And it’s on! Ice climbing season is here and more importantly winter has arrived in the mountains. We climbed Difficile Monster - definitely not difficile as it is modestly graded at WI3, 90ish’ meters. As you can see, it’s that ‘in between seasons’ type of conditions but the storm that has now arrived may very well create a loose dry or storm or wind slab problem up high in the alpine. So stay head’s up out there this weekend if you’re ice climbing in avalanche terrain. The other factor is there are few routes in shape with a lot of people itching to climb and that in and of itself creates human factors to be aware of. If you have little or no familiarity with the avalanche phenomena, CanRock Mountain Guides offers an AST 1 for Ice Climbers course and the first 2 weekends of November 6th and 7th and November 13th and 14th. We have a 3rd AST course as well December 11th and 12th 2021. Get educated learn to make sound decisions, luck will only get you so far and when it runs out the consequences are deadly serious.
