First climbing in the Yukon Territory this past weekend. Visiting my partner and getting to know some of the folks in the climbing community in Whitehorse and Haines Junction. Cool places, good stone and fine people. Thanks to for showing and myself some of the local climbing areas.

I will guide approximately 90 days this winter. The Mammut Allugator avalanche shovel is a tool I use every one of those 90 days. Digging test profiles helps to inform decisions but this year I’m keeping things simple until the end of the season.

There have been many posts about the issues in the snowpack this year in the Rockies along with most of the the whole of the Interior B.C. There have been several layers of concern this winter but the one that is making the headlines is the facets that developed in the first 3 weeks of November and were then buried on or around the 21st. This photo was taken on the 31st of December. You can clearly see near the base of the snowpack where the yellow line is the layer boundary for the 21st. On that day I did several extended column tests and got moderate to hard sudden collapses on this layer that was 80cm from the surface and about 40cm off the ground. Quite a number of good social posts have been put up by ski guides, AvCan forecasters and even pro ski athletes….everyone is echoing the same thing. Do not trust this layer and sustain good terrain selection going forward because this layer will be a fixture in the snowpack for probably quite an extended period of our winter.

This is in the south rockies near Fernie. I'll take a wild guess and say this is the Nov 23rd facets/surface hoar combo. This layer has been pointed out as a very problematic layer by a few other very competent avalanche forecasters and other observers. Head's up hockey.

Advanced rope rescue course last week was a great refresher for me seeing as how it was 10 or 11 years since I’d last taken it. All of the techniques, methods and the data and evidence to back them up evolves over time. Great course delivery by the master Kirk Mauthner at Basecamp Innovations. Also some superb students with lots of diverse skills and backgrounds adding to the quality and depth of the course. Thanks to all for their energy and enthusiasm!!!
