👋MEET THE GUIDES - PART 3👋

A born and raised Banff local and Johnny has been fishing on Minnewanka and surrounding lakes and rivers in the Banff area ever since he was a kid. When he’s not fishing he enjoys other activities such as hockey, rugby or just spending time outdoors! Johnny’s favourite part of being a fishing guide is getting to know other people and showing them his hometown area!

We are deeply saddened by the impact of the wildfire in Jasper and cannot begin to imagine the feeling of such devastating loss.

Our thoughts are with the community, first responders, firefighters and all involved in such a tireless fight.

For those local to the Canadian Rockies, we know that the weather is unpredictable. Our number one top tip is to always be prepared for whatever the weather and this is no exception for Lake Minnewanka!

What should you bring for a fishing tour on Lake Minnewanka?

🧥A warm layer or rain coat
🤠A hat to protect your head from the sun or a toque to keep your head warm
☀️Sun cream as UV rays come from all angles! The sun also reflects off the water!
🥾Closed toe footwear! There are lots of tripping hazards on a boat!

Now you know what to bring, it's time to go fishing!🎣

🎣5 Fun facts about Lake Minnewanka!🎣

👉️It's one of the top 10 spots in North America to catch fish Lake Trout—one of Alberta's largest.

👉️The lake got its name from the Stoney-Nakoda First Nations people. They called it Minn-waki or “Lake of the Spirits.”

👉️Lake Minnewanka is a glacial lake that is 21 km (13 mi) long and 142 m (466 ft) deep, making it the 2nd longest lake in the mountain parks of the Canadian Rockies (the result of a power dam at the west end).

👉️There is a small village called Minnewanka Landing that exists underwater at Lake Minnewanka! You can scuba dive to view the well-preserved ruins!

👉️First Nation people long inhabited areas around Lake Minnewanka, as early 14,000 years ago, according to stone tools and a Clovis point spearhead discovered by archaeologists!

We're so lucky to be able to fish on this beautiful lake with so many stories to tell!

As we have a responsibility to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, the following practices are in place:

Boats will be sanitized before and after each fishing trip.
Your guide will be masked at all times while with you.
All fishers will be required to wear masks while with us - masks supplied.
You must practice physical distancing to avoid close contact with others.
Fishing with others will only allowed if you are from the same household.
Hand-sanitizing will be required before and after fishing.
Fishers must be symptom-free when booking and will also be questioned on arrival.

One of the species of fish you may catch on Lake Minnewanka is a Cisco! 🎣 Cisco, sometimes referred to as lake herring, is the most widespread of the cisco-type fishes in North America. They are slender-bodied and silvery with pinkish iridescence on its sides. Their diet is predominantly zooplankton and insect larvae! This species can grow as large as 40 cm and 2.3 kg (five pounds), but is more commonly 28 to 38 cm long and 170 to 907 grams (six ounces to two pounds) in weight. 🐟🐟 Have you ever caught a Cisco?
