🐾 Breed Highlight: The Alaskan Husky
The Alaskan Husky is a mixed-breed sled dog celebrated for its incredible speed, endurance, and work ethic. Originally developed by Alaskan villagers and mushers, these dogs were bred by mixing traditional sled dogs like the Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, and Canadian Indian Husky with European breeds such as Greyhounds, German Shorthaired Pointers, and Salukis. This blend created a versatile, efficient sled dog capable of excelling in mid- to long-distance pulling.
Alaskan Huskies come in a variety of shapes, sizes, coat types, and colors, depending on their lineage. They are defined by their purpose rather than their appearance, making each dog unique. Known for their drive and resilience, they’re a favourite among mushers for their ability to handle tough conditions while maintaining speed and stamina.
We also have Alaskan Racing Huskies, a subset of Alaskan Huskies bred specifically for competitive events like the Iditarod and Yukon Quest. These dogs often have lighter frames and more Greyhound or Pointer genetics, emphasizing speed and agility over the rugged endurance of traditional sled dogs.
One thing both types share is their need for extra care in colder temperatures due to their lean builds and shorter coats. This is the perfect example of why we have individualized care programs for each dog in our pack, as they all have different needs!
Have questions about this amazing breed? Ask us below! 🐾

One of the best parts of a Snowy Owl tour? You can drive your own sled.
With our self-driven sleds, you get to feel what it’s like to lead a team of huskies through the Rockies. We’ll show you the ropes at the start, and then you’re off, standing on the runners, guiding your own sled along the trails. And if you're coming with friends or family, you can swap halfway so everyone gets a turn.
If kicking back is more your style, we also have instructor-driven sleds where you can relax and enjoy the views while our guides do the work. Whether you're driving or riding, it’s an experience you won’t forget!

🌟 Thank You, Bow Valley! 🌟
We are deeply humbled and grateful to be voted Best Adventure Company in Canmore and 2nd Best Tourist Attraction in Canmore! As a family-run business that has called this valley home for over 40 years, this recognition from our community means the world.
While visitors come from far and wide to experience the Rocky Mountains, we know that not everyone has the chance to explore the area’s untouched beauty without being a seasoned athlete or adventurer. At Snowy Owl, we pride ourselves on offering one of the most unique ways to enjoy the landscapes of the Canadian Rockies—with no need for athletic ability or previous experience. We welcome people of all ages and abilities, and we’re honoured to have hosted unforgettable moments for so many, including a very special guest who celebrated her 100th birthday on one of our tours!
In the four decades we’ve been operating in the Bow Valley, we’ve stayed creative, adapting with the community by adding exciting options like dog carting and transforming dog sledding from a racing sport to an activity for everyone to enjoy. Through each chapter of our journey, the support of this community has been the foundation of our success.
Thank you to everyone in Canmore for embracing us, to every guest who has joined us over the years, whether from near or far, to our outstanding Crew, and, of course, to our Pack. These spirited, quirky, hardworking huskies are the heartbeat of Snowy Owl, and we couldn’t do what we do without them. Here’s to many more adventures together! 🐾💙

Taking you behind the scenes at the Kennel. Our winter turnover has begun, and that means that the Pack's bedding has been swapped from wood chips to straw. While huskies love the winter and are notoriously made for the cold, we are always committed to keeping them warm, comfortable, healthy, and happy. Straw provides excellent insulation due to its air pockets. We check the bedding daily to ensure it remains clean and dry, removing any soiled material promptly to maintain a healthy environment for our dogs.
Meet Ghost. A ten-year-old Alaskan Husky who has recently retired from an incredible career as a sled dog and is ready to live out his golden years as a house dog as soon as he finds the perfect family. Ghost is an odd duck. He's very goofy and quirky in the best kind of way. He's sure to make you smile (he's often smiling himself), and he's a big fan of attention. He loves people and is also pretty fond of ripping around with his fellow four-legged pals.
If you or someone you know would like a lovable, quirky, adorable husky to share your life and home with, Ghost might just be your guy. Head to our website to learn more about the adoption process! https://www.snowyowltours.com/adopt/

Our story? It’s a long one. But we’ll give you a little glimpse.
Our story began in 1983, but the roots of Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours™ reach back to an earlier moment of inspiration. Raised in the rugged Canadian Rockies, Connie Arsenault developed a deep love for nature and animals. Her passion for sled dogs was sparked when she met a man trekking from Alaska to Montana by dog team. The power and connection between the dogs and the wild captured her imagination, and she knew this was her path.
With just three dogs, Connie started sled dog racing at the newly-opened Canmore Nordic Centre, where she honed her skills and embraced the thrill of the sport. Racing wasn’t just competition—it was a way to experience the rugged beauty of the Rockies. Fuelled by her love of the dogs and the wilderness, she soon realized she wanted to share this experience with others.
In 1983, with one sled and ten dogs, Connie founded Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours™. What began as a humble operation rooted in her love of racing quickly grew into a way to bring people closer to the wilderness, sharing the adventure she cherished.
Today, Snowy Owl is proudly run by Connie’s son, Jereme, and his wife, Caitlin, who carry forward the legacy of adventure, connection, and a deep love for this incredible community.

One thing you should know about the Snowy Owl Pack: they get pretty fired up before a tour. 🔥
Join Jereme and Jesse on a 1,800km journey to pick up 6 sled dogs from a kennel in Yellowknife to join the Snowy Owl Pack. We have a wonderful relationship with Jo Kelly at Qimmiq Kennels, and some of these new additions to our pack have family members at Snowy Owl already.
Jer and Jesse had a long, scenic, and successful journey to bring these pups back to their new home in Alberta. They're already fitting in great and bringing some serious energy. They're ready to run, and we can't wait to get them out on Cart Tours this summer!
Staff spotlight with our Office Manager, Jodi. A local to Canmore, Jodi's family lineage has deep roots in here in the Bow Valley. A familiar voices to some, hear about what drew her back home and what she loves about her position here at Snowy Owl.
Staff Spotlight with our Operations Manager, Will! Hear about his life and how he ended up working for us and our sister company, White Wolf Rafting. During his time off in the winter Will enjoys to ski, in the summer you'll find him out on river or camping. Thanks for you Will for your hard work and dedication to our pack 🐾

While 2023 is coming to an end, there is still more dog sledding to be done in 2024! Wishing everyone a Happy New Year 🎇🐾❄️
Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours was formed in Canmore, Alberta by Connie and Charles Arsenault in 1983 when Canmore was a quiet coal mining town. Surprisingly, sled dog tours were non-existent back in the early 1980’s. The thrill of travelling our majestic back country by dog team was not yet discovered by our visitors, and for many in Canmore, dog sledding seemed to be historical – simply a part of our past. On December 1st, 1983 Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours sent out it's first commercial sled dog team and blazed the trail for sled dog touring operators in the Bow Valley.
Since then, we have grown from 1 dog team and 10 sled dogs to 16 dog teams and 180 sled dogs respectfully! For us it has always been about the remarkable and beautiful sled dogs in our care, always ensuring that any increase in sleds would under no circumstances compromise the ethical treatment of our husky family.
Another ambition in establishing Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours for Connie and Charles existed in another dream which was to create a family legacy that they could enjoy together with their children Jereme and Carlin. Regrettably, on October 7th, 2006, Charles passed away unexpectedly leaving Connie, Jereme and Carlin to carry on this dream without him. Proudly, both Jereme and Carlin now share ownership of Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours Inc. allowing the family legacy to live on for years to come.
Now, both Jereme and Carlin have started their own families. Jereme and his wife Caitlin (Snowy Owl's Office Manager) have three children - Ariel, Alice and Atlas. Carlin and her husband Ethan (Snowy Owl's Director of Operations) have a son, Charlie.
"It is our absolute honour to share our livelihood with our visitors and to exemplify the dog sledding sport as we believe it should be experienced! We are so thankful for our parents and their determination to create something so special for our family. Thank you mom and dad, we are forever grateful."
― Jereme Arsenault and Carlin Kimble
