Hello Naturalists,
I hope you all had a wonderful summer. Keep an eye on the CB Naturalists website and page for information about meetings which will be starting again in October. In the meantime, I thought I would pass along some information about an upcoming fungus walk which we are participating in along with the Bras d'Or Lakes Biosphere Region Association. Please see below for the details!

The Bras Dโ€™Or Lake Biosphere Region Association Presents
WALK THE WATERSHED!
An exploration of Biosphere trails
And a search for The Fungus Among Us
(specifically at Uisge Ban Falls Provincial Park) Saturday โ€“ September 28, 2024 @ 1:00 p.m. Meet at trailhead parking area, 715 North Branch Road, Forks Baddeck

Join the Bras dโ€™Or Lake Biosphere Region Association and the intrepid members of the Cape Breton Naturalistsโ€™ who will once again will share their expertise and knowledge to help you find and identify fungi and their allies during a fall fungi walk at Uisge Ban Falls Provincial Park.

This is THE place to observe fungi and their allies as the deep and rich soils of the hardwood forest support an amazing variety of common and not-so-common mushrooms, slime molds and rusts.Late flora, butterflies, dragonflies and damselfiles and songbirds will, of course, be present, but it is the fungus among us that will be the star of the show!

PLEASE NOTE: Because the trail beyond the final bridge is in very poor shape, we will NOT travel beyond the area below the bridge.Trail difficulty: Easy to moderate - Although this a maintained 1.5 km linear trail, sections can be wet and/or rough due to exposed tree roots and rocks from trail use. Streams are bridged. The trail begins in conifer-dominated forest with its own site-appropriate fungi. The forest, as the trail climbs, transitions to hardwoods, resulting in a more open forest floor and a wider range of both fungi and late flora. We will meet in the parking area at the trailhead on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 1:00 p.m.

Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear and bring water. Snacks optional!

Please visit blbra.ca for more information.

Weโ€™re so excited to share that thanks to an incredible outpouring of public support, the Nature Trust has successfully been able to secure Little Charles Island โ€“ one of the last remaining pieces of the 100 Wild Islands archipelago on Nova Scotiaโ€™s eastern shore.

A big thank you to everyone who donated or shared our campaign, and to the Canada Nature Fund for making this incredible conservation win possible!

Stay tuned in the coming weeks, as weโ€™ll have more information about Little Charles Island available on nsnt.ca.
