Left your Valentine's plans til the last minute? No problem! There's still plenty of time to book a dinner out at a variety of Castlegar establishments. The Kootenay Current has done a good job of listing the specials being offered at 7 places including The Grand Buddha Bistro and The Grateful Table.

There are others that are not listed tho, including the Lion's Head Smoke & Brew Pub which is offering a dinner special and live music, and the Black Rooster Classic Bar and Grill that has steak and lobster on the menu as well as a karaoke event.

These beautiful photos of a Northern Pygmy Owl were taken by on Waldie Island recently.

True to their name, these are some of the smallest owls out there. Here are a few more cool facts about them:

🦉they have bright eyes in front of their head and the backs of their heads are feathered with a pair of quite convincing “eye spots”.

🦉Northern Pygmy Owls raise a pair of tufts on the sides of their head when threatened by a predator, such as a hawk or cat.

🦉because they’re so small, they’ve been know to be harassed by angry mobs of song birds and even hummingbirds.

Did you know there’s a trumpeter swan wintering site located near Lemon Creek, about a 45-minute drive from Castlegar in the Slocan Valley?

Located just off Mon Amie Road, the 151-acre Walter Clough Wildlife Area is a popular resting spot during the migratory months but in the winter it’s home to hundreds of trumpeter and tundra swans, geese and ducks because of the easily accessible food the river marsh offers. It’s a great location to visit via skis or snowshoes along the Slocan Valley Trail.

Other popular spots to go birding closer to Castlegar include the Selkirk College Hiking Trails, Waldie Island and Syringa Provincial Park.

Despite the chilly temps, the volunteers did an excellent job grooming and preparing the course in the early hours before the races began at 10am.
