Our featured local artists this month are Kate and Jerry Enewold who were both born into creative families and who now live in Thrums, just north of Castlegar.

Kate's father Zeljko Kujundzic founded the Kootenay School of Art in 1960 and Jerry’s father, Robert F. Enewold studied painting alongside fellow student Grant Wood, the creator of the famous “American Gothic” painting.

These days Kate is designing jewellery as a silversmith and Jerry is painting and carving. For more about the artistic couple and to see more of their work, visit https://www.destinationcastlegar.com/arts-culture/meet-artistic-couple-kate-and-jerry-enewold/

Check out the statue that now greets those entering the new Confluence Building, where our offices and the Castlegar Visitor’s Centre is located.

Entitled “Rebirth,” this beautiful mosaic Matryoshka (aka Russian nesting doll) was done by Winlaw artist Peter Vogelaar. Traditionally Matryoshkas represent a mother carrying a child within her and they also illustrate unity of body, soul, mind, heart and spirit. Peter says this particular piece was inspired by nature, which is why she’s sheltering a fresh seedling, symbolizing new growth.

The sculpture first appeared as part of the the 2021 Castlegar Sculpturewalk and, for the first time in the Walk’s history, it tied for the People’s Choice Award with “Choosing Hope,” a sculpture of fingers holding a dandelion gone to seed, created by Revelstoke artist Kyle Thornley.

The “Rebirth” piece was purchased by the Castlegar Rotary and was recently donated to the Confluence building.

The Paulson Pass nordic ski trails are starting to shape up nicely, just in time for the Castlegar Nordic Ski Club AGM and Season Kick-off Party this evening at Tailout Brewing.

Here’s the club’s latest trail report: “Rains have softened the existing snow base over the lower trails. We will now wait over the weekend for more snow to fall and settle with the colder temperatures which are forecasted. Our trail grooming team will begin packing the trails next week and we should have most of our trail system in excellent shape and fully track-set for a Nov. 23rd opening date.”

Tonight’s AGM and party goes from 5:30-8pm and there will be a free pizza dinner at the start and guided ski waxing sessions at 6. The AGM lasts from 7-8.

Congrats to the City of Castlegar for once again winning at the national Communities in Bloom ceremony in PEI recently.🥇

The city took home the “Outstanding Achievement Landscape Award” for its commitment to enhancing public spaces and its dedication for sustainable landscape design. The award specifically highlights Canada’s tallest castle play structure, which was installed at Millennium Park this year.

The judges noted the project was designed with both environmental sustainability and accessibility in mind and key features include:

🛝 The use of Robinia wood, a renewable, weather-resistant material.
🛝 Incorporation of native plants such as Kinnikinnick, Arrowleaf Balsamroot, and Shrubby Penstemon, which reduces water demand and supports local biodiversity.
🛝 Installation of a safety surfacing of recycled rubber for durability, minimizing the need for frequent maintenance and replacement.
🛝 Using landscaping choices that promote long-term sustainability, including nine new shade trees and recycled plastic benches.

Castlegar is a beautiful location in the autumn: the larch trees turn yellow and the mountain slopes surrounding the river-strewn valleys become canvases of every shade of green and gold.

Come and explore why so many people are falling for our little city in the valley.

Meet our featured local animal for November: the wily coyote!

Coyotes are one of the few animals that have expanded their range since European settlers arrived in North America and they’re now found in Castlegar. While some deem them nuisances, coyotes are, in fact, excellent for pest control, hunting rodents such as mice and rats near residential areas and farms.

They are most active at dusk and dawn and are very vocal: you'll often hear them utilizing a wide range of yips, howls, whines, growls and barks. In fact, their scientific name "Canis latrans" translates to “barking dog.”

For more facts about these fascinating creatures, visit: https://www.destinationcastlegar.com/out-about/wildlife-watching/coyote/
