Guests at the Seaside Shack and Nook get to watch these free-range cows graze the island, bask in the ocean, pose for the gram and create traffic jams. Oddly enough, they’re usually blocking exiting traffic and not incoming. This particular traffic cluster lasted about 15 minutes.

Many locals check the weather by where the cows are on the island. I’m still learning their patterns but they definitely like to go in the ocean early for a dip if it’s going to be a hot day. Please comment below if you know any of their patterns.

Want to see these free-range cows and all their cute calfs?
1. Do the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton, NS.
2. Visit in Chéticamp.
3. For the best daily view of their shenanigans or to get mooooed to sleep, book your stay on the water at Seaside Shacks. 👇🏻

This peaceful minute is brought to you by the most chill and stress free living creature I can think of. Many people fear these guys but fear is too often due to a lack of knowledge. So..

The Aurelia Aurita, known as the moon jelly, is the most common and widely recognized jellyfish species. Though it has venom, it is harmless to humans—it’s even a popular dish in China!
The umbrella on the Aurelia Aurita can reach 30 to 40 centimeters, with marginal tentacles and go**ds arranged in four circles. There are four long oral arms in the manubrium.
It lives in all oceans of the northern hemisphere and is very abundant.
Characteristics and Features:
* Mild sting with harmless venom
* Clear and transparent
* Around 5 to 40cm wide
* Saucer-shaped umbrella head
* Short, stinging tentacles and go**ds in four circles
* Four long oral arms
* Abundant in most oceans and coastal waters
* Can withstand freezing water (up to -6 degrees Celsius)

I’ll never get tired of sunsets over the ocean. We’re in the East Coast on the western side of Cape Breton, so it’s kinda cheating. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Drive a couple minutes in either direction and it’s truly an ocean sunset.

Stillness. It seems to be as rare with people as the ocean. Remember to take at least a minute a day to do nothing but breathe.

Most fishing boats around here catch the sunrises and not the sunsets. Maybe this one works hard enough to get both. Either way, it looks like it was a long day for this guy.

Have a wonderful last weekend of September Chéticamp!

We can’t wait for October to paint the mountains with all the colours of the wind and to explore new hikes.

A throwback to cooler times.
For anyone complaining about the summer heat, here’s an icy series from the backside of Chéticamp Island, one of my favourite easy winter spots to check out.

The beautiful chaos is the result of tides and winds crushing the ice up on itself making interesting figures.

Celebrating Canada’s birthday alone in Cape Breton in my last few days of quarantine isn’t so bad. My heart is happy to be “back home” surrounded by the ocean with mountains as the backdrop.

Throwback to the feeling of building forts in the ditch during snow storms as a child.

The process of building this behemoth was a labour of love and creativity. It‘s 1,100sq.ft of cartwheels, yoga mats, family gatherings, weddings or simple one on one time with your favourite person.

St. Peter's Church / l'Église Saint-Pierre was completed in 1893 and is by far one of the tallest structures in northern Cape Breton. It can be seen from many kilometres away and even from the Skyline trail in the park, which is a 15km straight shot view. It originally stood at 181’, though, because of “Les Suêtes” that blew down the steeple in it’s early years, they had to reconstruct and design a new steeple to stand 15 to 20’ lower. The astonishing architecture and height isn’t stifled by the beauty of the highlands that stand in it’s background but rather adds to the beautiful scenery that Chéticamp is known for.

*Les Suêtes: A local Acadian French term that depicts exceptionally strong south-east foehn winds.

Found this on the deck at the Seaside Nest the other day. It made me stop and think about how fortunate I am to have a voice and to be able to do my own thing hosting so many great people from so many countries.

The Nest is up to the test this week with 11 adults staying there as a working-getaway and I can’t wait to hear how it goes.

Well there’s an eye opener! Creating spaces for people to relax, enjoy, use as home base or just to hide from harsh winds and snow storms has been a lot of fun these past few years. I can’t wait to roll out new options for travellers who really want something different.

Frozen in time.

The Chéticamp gypsum mine operated from 1908 to 1939 and is now a beautiful place to visit during any season.

The water is clear, safe to swim in and very deep! How deep? That’s my little secret.. @ Chéticamp, Nova Scotia
