JANUARY 1ST. “January 1st was started about twelve years ago. I met Gracie Kelly, who is a really good friend of mine, at the Vedder Bridge and it was on January 1st – we were talking about raising public awareness of the value of the river, the salmon, and the cedar to people who come and enjoy this whole area. She said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we had a ceremony on January the 1st to start the new year in a really good way that people could relate to?’ So we chit-chatted and said ya, let’s do that! Let’s have a ceremony to honour the salmon, the river, and the cedars.” - Eddie Gardner

Join at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at 9:30 AM for the Annual S’íwes te Teméxw: Salmon, Cedar, and Water Ceremony. Led by Eddie Gardner of Sqwá First Nation and Gracie Kelly of The’wa:li First Nation, this meaningful event honours the salmon, river, and cedar trees as we welcome the new year.

The ceremony includes a procession to the Vedder River, an offering at a ceremonial cedar tree, and a shared lunch at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve—a heartfelt celebration of nature’s abundance and our shared responsibility to protect it.

HOLLY JOLLY CHWK. Wishing You a Joyful Holiday Season from Tourism Ch’illiwack! 🎄🎁❄️

We are so grateful for this land on which we work, live, and play - the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Pelólxw and Ts’elxweyeqw Tribes, who are part of the Stó:lō-Coast Salish Peoples. We recognize the longstanding relationship that Indigenous peoples have with this land as they are the original caretakers.

As we reflect on this wonderful year, we’re incredibly grateful for the support of our community partners, the adventurers who visit us from near and far, and the amazing people who make Chilliwack so special. ⭐️

We hope your holiday season is filled with joy, warmth, and countless magical moments. May the New Year bring you exciting new adventures and cherished memories! ❤️

This is Chilliwack | #InStólō

The Magnetic Field is changing, and it’s pointing East.

In search of pathways less travelled, Chilliwack is that place for rejuvenation. To unplug from empty distraction and plug into elevated perspectives.

Mountain High Valley Low River Wide Lake Deep

The Chilliwack River flows out of the valley and into the Fraser River. Going back upstream, as far as you can go – this is the meaning behind the name of our city. This is the meaning of Chilliwack, or Ts’elxwéyeqw. Holding tightly to our Indigenous roots, we pay homage to the Stó:lō people and Halq'eméylem language that connect us to the history and to the land.
