POLAR BEAR FACTS

Did you know? Polar bear skin is black, which retains much-needed heat from the sun. As shown in the photo, when a polar bear is wet, you can sometimes see black skin.

Polar bear fur isn’t white. Each hair shaft is pigment-free and transparent with a hollow core which reflects visible light, making their fur appear white.

SUNSET - CHURCHILL STYLE

There are times when sunset, northern lights and clouds play, creating nature’s combined boreal canvas where oncoming night flames green amidst departing sighs of red and yellow. “Don’t whistle”, some Indigenous elders say, “or the lights will come down.” If Aurora does come down, “clap your hands” and the lights will go back up. Others say you can hear the lights, a sign caribou roam the forest below.

Last night, one the strongest solar storms in years gave Lazy Bear Expeditions guests the northern lights experience of a lifetime! It’s KP 8.67 Index (a measure from 0-9 ranking disturbances in Earth’s geomagnetic field), happens ~60 nights every 11-year solar cycle when the sun flips its magnetic field, significantly increasing sunspots’ intensity and frequency.
