Lunch Box Ledgends
Fun time on the estuary this afternoon.
Looking for Herring
I took this video of Lambert Channel & Tree Island around 10:30 this morming. The wind was blowing 20-25 Knots and building. No gill net opening yet. The weather will improve tomorrow.
Herring are coming to the local waters. Although they are hard to see, the predators are everywhere. Last year we had incredible sightings of Orcas, in amongst the sea lions, eagles and other wildlife. We will try to get some trips out to view this spectacle of nature. If you would like to get on the list of interested people, send me an E-mail with number of group & a phone #.

Kite Surfing in Comox
Kite surfing in Comox was good this morning.
Point Holmes March 9th
We will be doing a Herring Spawn Tour tomorrow at 12:30. The fishing is winding down, but there is lots of wildlife out around. Orcas were sighted off the spit a couple days ago. $35 pp for a 2 hour trip.
Point Holmes March 8th
March 8th- This morning I drove around trying to find the herring. There was a reported spawn south of Little River yesterday, but I could see no signs today. This clip shows some sea-lions and bird activity in frount of Point Holmes. We are going to check our crab traps tomorrow afternoon and it may turn into a Herring veiwing trip. The weather looks good but it sounds like the Seine Fleet is heading down to Crome Island area. The Gillnet Fishery has reached its quota and is now closed.
Waiting for Herring
This was yesterday at Point Holmes. Today there are no boats or sea lions. I know the gill netters started fishing in the Qualicum area. The Seine fishery is not opened yet to my knowledge. The biggest school of herring appears to down at the bottom of Lambert Channel.
Octopus
We found a fairly large octopus in our crab trap. It was missing all its arms and was feeding on some Red Rock Crab in the trap. We can only guess what took its arms. If the octopus can find enough to eat, its arms will grow back.
Sea-lions
The Sea-lions are back. Maybe the herring will show up early. We are starting a list of people interested in viewing the herring fishery. Let us know if you want to be added to this list.E-mail is best way.

Herring Gill Netter
We got out on the herring fishery. Quite a sight.
Sea lions feasting on the herring
It was a nice day for our Herring tour this afternoon. We hope to do another one later in the week.
In my last post I shared the link to search for Fisheries Bulletins. When you get to the page you will see the year is already filled in. For local waters highlight Tidal south coast-inside. For fisheries category, scroll down and select Commercial-Herring-Roe:Test Fishery. Go to the bottom of the page and click Display Notices. This will take you to a page that lists all the bulletins. Here is a link to the last bulletin.
