🧡🌻 🌻🧡

Back in 1994, Creston was already a powerhouse in BC’s agriculture scene. The valley boasted over 6,000 acres of fruit trees, and farmers were producing more than 2 million pounds of cherries annually! Local strawberry cooperatives in places like Wynndel had long been feeding the province, and innovative growers were already experimenting with early organic methods.

And behind it all? A legacy of passionate local organizations, like:

🍓 Creston Valley Agricultural Association (Founded before 1914)
🌱 Creston Valley Cooperative Association (1914-1938)
🍒 The Co-Operative Fruit Growers of Wynndel (Founded 1913)
🍓 Today’s Creston Valley Food Action Coalition, Fields Forward Society, Kootenay Local Agricultural Society, Creston Community Seed Bank Society, and our own Creston Valley Fall Fair Association continue that mission — keeping Creston’s food on the table, seeds local, and community thriving. 💚

📍Still growing strong since 1918 — we can’t wait to see you at the next Fall Fair!

🌻 Throwback Thursday! 🌻
We’re flipping through time with a peek at the Creston Valley Fall Fair Competitors Handbook from 1982! This gem from over 40 years ago reminds us how deeply rooted agriculture, community, and creativity are in our valley’s story.

📆 That year, the fair was held on September 10 & 11 at the Rec Centre in Creston. Livestock, preserves, produce, and pride—this booklet was the guide to it all!

🚜 Did you know? In 1982:

B.C.’s Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) was still in its first decade, helping protect farmland right here in the Kootenays and across the province.

Creston’s fertile soil and long growing season continued to support robust fruit and vegetable production—especially cherries, apples, and corn.

Local farmers were adapting to changing markets and technologies, laying the groundwork for today’s innovative agricultural practices.

📰 Around Creston in 1982:

Closure of the Creston Railway Station
The Canadian Pacific Railway station in Creston officially closed in 1982, marking the end of a key chapter in the town’s transportation history.

Creston Review’s Final Year Approaches
The Creston Review, Creston’s longstanding local newspaper since 1908, was nearing its final days. It remained a trusted community voice through 1982 before printing its last issue in 1983.

🌾 Throwback Thursday! 🌾
This is the Creston Valley Fall Fair booklet from 1978.

Held on September 8 & 9 at the Recreation Centre in Creston, B.C., this booklet includes the full prize list and programme from the fair nearly 50 years ago.

Did You Know?

Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR): Established in 1973, the ALR was a groundbreaking initiative by British Columbia to preserve valuable farmland amidst rapid urbanization. By 1978, it had become a model for farmland protection, ensuring that agriculture remained a priority in the province.

Canola Innovation: In 1978, Canadian plant breeders achieved a significant breakthrough by altering the fatty acid composition of rapeseed, leading to the creation of canola. This new crop became a major player in Canada's agricultural exports.

Supply Management System: The late 1970s saw the strengthening of Canada's supply management system for dairy, poultry, and eggs. This system was designed to stabilize prices and ensure fair returns for
farmers, shaping the agricultural landscape we know today.

From vintage fair entries to pivotal agricultural milestones, it's fascinating to see the roots of our community's rich farming heritage. 🌱

Farming is more than just a job—it’s a way of life built on dedication, resilience, and a deep connection to the land. Through droughts, storms, and long hours, our farmers keep our community fed and thriving.

The Creston Fall Fair is a celebration of that hard work and our region’s rich agricultural history. In tough times, we’re reminded just how important it is to support our farmers and local producers.

This photo came to us courtesy of a happy fair goer in 2024!

Did anyone else score some sunflower seeds from Seedy Saturday? The sun is getting stronger and that ground should be thawing by now, but frost could be in the future still.

These look like mammoth giant sunflowers on the right but the variety to the left is unknown. The bright orange and red sunflowers are just so striking but probably don't grow so tall! One can certainly try.

Oh and the barn at the flats has a lot of spaces to display sunflowers, let's fill them all :)

If the submitter of the photo wishes to be tagged they can tag themselves. We have their permission to post this picture.

🚜🎃 What's the secret to GIANT pumpkins? 🎃🚜

Some of these pumpkins are monsters! 😲 But how do they do it!? We know a lot of love (and maybe some top secret tricks) go into growing these massive gourds.

Do you have a tried-and-true method for growing the biggest pumpkin on the block? Special soil? A secret fertilizer mix? A lot of pumpkin pep talks? Drop your best tips in the comments and let's keep the friendly competition alive!

Throwback Thursday: 1969 Crawford Bay & District Fall Fair

Did you know that in 1969, the Fall Fair wasn’t just in Creston? This prize list from the Crawford Bay & District Agricultural Fall Fair gives us a glimpse into the fairs held up the lake! 🌾🏆

Back then, admission was just 25 cents, and dedicated community members like Mrs. E. Vance (President), Mrs. L. Lovestrom (Vice-President), Mrs. B. Green (Treasurer), and Mrs. N. Auger (Secretary) helped bring it all together. Women organizers making it happen!

We’d love to hear your memories of fairs in Crawford Bay and the surrounding communities! Did you or someone you know attend or participate in the events back then? Share your stories in the comments!

Wouldn't it be lovely to go through a stack of old Fall Fair booklets? These come to us from the Museum catalogue and have been lovingly kept in good condition.

Do you remember attending the fair as a youngster? Do you have any memories that have stayed with you?

We picture apple boxes full to bursting, handstitched table cloths, the smell of hay and the sound of a happy crowd of people. In that respect, not much has changed. Time travel is real after all.

🌻✨ Throwback Thursday! ✨🌻

Take a stroll down memory lane with this blast from the past — the 1949 Fall Fair Prize List for the Second Annual Flower Show and Household Arts Exhibition! 🌼

It’s incredible to see how far we've come while still holding onto the heart of what makes the Creston Valley Fall Fair so special — celebrating community, creativity, and tradition.

Can you imagine sitting down to a hot cup of tea in 1949 and browsing the prize list for the Fall Fair here? Having that connection to people in place here from that time in history feels special, and I bet some of the babies being balanced on laps while mamas filled out 1949 Fall Fair forms are still attending to this day.🌼❤

Friends and family stick together at the Fair- literally!

The Farmer Olympics was a weekend highlight for many. Watching good buddies dressed up in team costumes compete with each other brought a smile to everyone's faces. We cheered just as hard when they did well as when they fell over! Thanks to our MC who kept up with all the antics and kept us laughing.

Great job to everyone who competed! Now is the time to tag your dream team and pick up a training regimen of extra hay bale reps for the next fair!

What was your favourite moment of the Farmer Olympics?
