Sail With Unmatched Luxury

12/08/2024

This is a review posted by a passenger who sailed ion the Icon of the Seas

I know I have many friends that want to know what we thought about Icon so here is what I wrote about our week aboard Icon of the Seas: November 23-30
A little about us: we are a family of five: our girls are 19, 17 and 14. We are budget cruiser, usually booking an interior unless we get good deals on a balcony. Most of the time, the ship is our destination and it was no different this trip.
Staff: Our cabin steward (Eduardo) was fantastic, as was our wait staff in the main dining room. We didn't wait forever for our drinks like we have on recent cruises. On those cruises, we learned on night one to bring a drink to dinner with us. Diana took great care of our party of 10, almost daily, in Playmakers as we cheered on our Detroit Lions, Georgia Bulldogs, Arizona Sun Devils, and Michigan State Spartans....or any other (mainly) football game we wanted to watch.
Food/Dining: The new food venues are AMAZING! Please add them to more ships, and don't get rid of Central Park Cafe. We love going there for breakfast. So quiet, less crowded, and delicious food. I went to the Windjammer the day we boarded and one evening I went for a light dinner there because I was too full to eat in the dining room (and the menu didn’t appeal to me) There were waayyyyy to many places to eat and I still didn't have them all. The Aqaudome Market Place was incredible as well. Crepes, pitas, and the monte cristo were my favorites there but my kids also enjoyed the mac and cheese (although it was dry many times) and the asian bar. The pitas took me right back to Greece. The churros (Surfside Bites) and the pretzel bites (Base Camp) are an amazing addition to the grab and go menu on board. The Main Dining Room food (and service) did not disappoint. You have the best of the best on this ship and it reminded me of dining room experiences we had years ago. I hope to see the quality improve again on other ships. We did eat at Giovanni's one night. Our server brought all appetizers out so we could eat them "family style." He also brought out small bowls of different pasta and sauces with our meals so that those of us that had the filet could get a taste of the delicious pasta they served. Our meal was amazing and memorable.
Bars: We really loved the details for all the bars to have a special drink menu, even if you couldn't get them everywhere. We are diamond (we get four free drinks a day each) so the girls all loved the zero proof options/suggestions, especially the blueberry nojito. They usually get tired of the "classic" virgin drinks by day two. The staff, drinks and locations were great. Lots of complaints on social media about Swim and Tonic, but we didn't have issues when we were there but probably because we utilized the space when it wasn't as busy on deck (port days, which were not ghost towns but I’m SURE sea days were busier). The coffee drinks at Rye and Bean were among my favorites!
On Board Activities: We did The Crown's Edge and staff was fantastic. He was awesome at distracting our girls (and us) on the plank before dropping them. Such a fun and unique experience. The waterslides on Thrill Island were fantastic. We didn't get "stuck" on them like some of the slides on other Royal ships. The ship was our destination so we took advantage of the port days to ride them (and once at night) so lines were short for us. We also had a casita one day (Roatan) and an oceanview bed in hideaway (Costa Maya). We had never done this previously, but we were able to book at a great price so we gave it a try. Now we know the value (which we would have paid a bit more than what we booked at but not at the published prices). Our kids and niece played some mini golf and loved it. We also tried the “sub soccer” which is right by the mini golf. Our kids did laser tag (no reservation needed and no cost) and had fun (or as much as you can as teens teamed up with younger kids lol). Love and Marriage, as always, was a good laugh as was the Quest. The carousel, splash pad and slide in Surfside were great for my four year old niece. She probably rode that slide 100+ times. The face painting and balloons animals were a nice things to "bring" from the Boardwalk on Oasis class ships in addition to the carousel.
Shows/Entertainment: The Dueling Piano bar was a nice new venue, but there was an issue with the female piano player's sound system, at least the night we were there. Half of our party was so bothered by it they had to leave. We don't visit Boleros, but it is worthy to note that it was always so full and people were clearly enjoying themselves! Aqua Action was AMAZING. The new Aquadome (theater) is so innovative. My dad said his heart skipped a beat a few times watching some of the new elements of the show. Elemental was ok. The ice shows are never top of my list of shows Royal does but we do go because they aren't awful. I did like some of the new elements (no pun intended) in the show though. And a lot of the music was really good too. Adam Kario (the headliner) was great! He was entertaining, funny and loved how he ended the show telling us about how he started juggling, his dad's support and then sharing his dad's favorite trick with us. Very heartfelt moment for this mom. Wizard of Oz...I have goosebumps thinking about it now, 3 days later. What an amazing show, and to have a live orchestra?!?!? Just wow. So well done! The Elton John tribute in the Schooner Bar left a bit to be desired. We didn't stay long. It wasn't what we hoped it to be. We did one comedy show and it was so good. We had a good laugh and enjoyed all the comedians, but Simeon was the best, in my opinion.
Venues/neighborhoods: Surfside was a wonderful place for us to spend sometime with our niece and my girls with their cousin. Having a bar, small buffet and some grab and go bites right there in the area was fantastic; something for everyone. And the churros were the best! The Pearl is a beautiful structure and center piece for the Royal Promenade. The space was well laid out with plenty of space for everyone. The Overlook in the Aquadome was a beautiful, peaceful area to watch the ocean while you read, enjoy a drink, or company of friends and family. The pods were a great feature as well, offering a bit more privacy. Our college student did some reading and studying in this space. Food and drink were also very close (Aquadome Marketplace, Overlook bar, and Rye and Bean). Thrill Island offered all the fun, and once again, some snacks and drinks were close by so you didn't have to go far from the fun to replenish. Central Park is always a favorite for us. It's quiet, peaceful and really beautiful with the plant life. The Hideaway was fantastic (we only used on port days or at night). We did not spend time there on sea days so I imagine those days it was extra crowded (as has been mentioned on Social Media), but we did love the space. Chill Island with multiple pools options was great. As someone who burns easily but enjoys relaxing outside, I love the amount of seating this area offers, including shaded seats. I never made it to Cloud 17 and I'm soooooo disappointed about that!
Stateroom: We had adjoining Infinite Balcony State rooms over looking Central Park (7 people ages, 68, 67, 45, 44, 19, 17 and 14 years old). We loved the new way the staterooms connect. Having a single door that we enter through and the "foyer" at the front of the room meant that we didn't loose any space or furniture in the room. I know people are VERY polar about these rooms. We spent many years cruising in interior rooms to save money. I can take or leave a balcony of any kind because I'm on a ship with a ton of space to be able to go relax and enjoy the ocean. I know some people like their private balcony, but that’s not me. We found having the extra space with the floor to ceiling window was great. We opened it a few times (mainly at night) for fresh air and to hear some of the music playing. It also makes for a great changing area if you are sharing a room with another couple, or teens. We closed the blinds and then closed the curtain and no one had to try and change in the tiny bathroom or hold up towels for privacy etc. We also loved having the extra seating on that side of the room so we could still sit and watch football but stay out of the way while others finished getting ready for dinner. The storage was great too! The only issue we had was the space between the baskets in the closet and the couch: it was hard to access the baskets because the couch was so close. Also, in case you have trouble finding it, the safe is behind the full length mirror (as is some storage) Plenty of power outlets. There is only one plug near the bed though. I wish there was one on each side.
Excursion/Ports: As I mentioned, the ship was our destination. We did not get off in Honduras or Costa Maya. But because we were celebrating our 2024 and 2025 high school graduates and this was likely our last BIG family vacation, we did an excursion that we have never done before. We went on the Cavern and Cenote Swim Combo in Cozumel. Our guide, Dimi, was amazing, but one of the staff members at the cenote was less than helpful. We did not let that ruin our day or our experience though. And the main office contacted us and remedied the situation in the days following our excursion. They get rave reviews from me for that! The first cenote was beautiful with two zip lines, snorkeling and a jumping platform. The cave swimming was indescribable. We had a great time and it was well worth the money.
Misc Notes: The elevator system was fantastic! I never had an elevator show up too full for people to get on. It was amazing not to stop at just about every floor. Additionally, they were almost never super crowded. The only thing I wish they did: Tell me what stops my elevator is making before it comes to get me (like they list the upcoming stops inside the elevator). Another new feature we loved was that the gangway was accessible from deck 5. The escalators bringing everyone to and from the gangway was genius. On other ships, you board after a long day in port and there is usually a bottle neck of people trying to use the same 4-6 elevators to return to the main parts of the ships or their room. Or, exhausted, you choose to climb a few flights of stairs. On Icon, passengers take the escalators to deck 5 (the Royal Promenade) which allowed people to have multiple way to go: back to their room; go for a drink, or grab a snack. Royal really has figured out how to make a mega cruise ship seem small/not crowded. I hope they can continue to keep great employees to keep these ships running well. The space is utilized so well, we never felt it was crowded!
This truly was the Icon of Vacations and we can't wait to take the Star of Vacations (since Port Canaveral is a bit closer to home).

Why Cruising is the Perfect Getaway
Bon Voyage!
If you're tired of the dreary winter weather and staring down the same ol' scenery, it may be time to call your travel agent and book a cruise. Not only are cruises easy to book, they can help you explore parts of the world you've never seen before. If you are ready to book but need a good excuse, here are 25 reasons to book a cruise
Food and Fun is Included
The all-inclusive nature of cruising is one of the most compelling reasons to book. Food and fun is included for one price. With so many activities and dining options on today's newest ships, you will never run out of things to do or dishes to try
Some Cruises Have Kids Clubs
If you plan to travel with kids, you'll also love the fact that most cruise lines have supervised kid's clubs with flexible hours. Even if you don't want someone to watch your kids all day, having a few hours to yourself every few days can make your vacation a lot less stressful.
Cruising Can Be Affordable
While you can spend a ton of money on a luxury cruise, you can also pay very little for an amazing experience.
Kids Could Cruise Free
Also, note that some cruise lines offer "kids cruise free" promotions for all or part of the year. While these promotions may be offered periodically on cruise lines like Carnival and Norwegian, MSC Cruises lets kids ages 11 and under on select itineraries all year long. Make sure to check on children's pricing if you hope to save on your next cruise.
Plan an Adults Trip
Don't want to travel with kids? Book your cruise when most children are in school and you will likely find few little ones on board. January and February are smart months to book an adult cruise since they fall after winter break and before Spring break.
You Can Upgrade if You Want
If you want to splurge for a special trip that's perfectly okay. Most cruise lines offer luxurious suites with giant wraparound balconies and some cruise lines even offer cabins with private Jacuzzis. You'll pay more for the experience, but you might enjoy your vacation more.
See Broadway Quality Shows
Cruises have really improved their entertainment over the years, and many now offer Broadway-style shows with professional singers, dancers, and performers. Some cruise lines even offer Cirque de Soleil shows that can take your vacation enjoyment up a few notches
Some Ships Have Bowling, Ziplines, and Waterparks
If you're a family with kids or someone who loves to be active on vacation, make sure to book a ship that has plenty to do. Since many cruise lines offer bowling alleys, ziplines, humungous pools, and onboard waterparks, this shouldn't be that hard.
You Can Escape The Cold
Winter can be cold, dreary, and dark, but the Caribbean is sunny with temperatures in the mid-80's for most of the year. Book a Caribbean cruise to visit tropical destinations like Barbados, St. Lucia, and St. Maarten, and you won't regret it.
See Several Destinations in One Trip
One of the biggest benefits of cruising s that fact that you can see more than one destination or island during a single trip. Many seven-night cruises even offer six different stops that let you explore new cultures and wake up in a new place every day
Pack and Unpack Once
Another benefit of cruising is the fact that you only have to pack and unpack once. This is a huge benefit over land-based vacationing that requires you to pack up your luggage and move it from place to place. If you want a vacation that's very little work, cruising is the way to go.
Avoid the Cost of Airfare
Many residents of Canada and the U.S live within a day's drive of a cruise port. If you want to avoid the cost of airfare, you can pack up your car and drive to your point of departure, whether that's in California, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, New York, New Jersey etc.
Avoid Cooking and Cleaning for the Week
Like an all-inclusive resort, cruises take care of all your daily chores for you. You don't have to cook a single meal while you're cruising, nor do you have to lift a finger to clean things up. It's okay to be lazy on vacation, right?
Book a Balcony for Endless Sea Views
If you love the relaxing sound of the ocean lapping just out your door, you can't do any better — or get any closer — than you can with a cruise. Book a balcony cabin for amazing sea views any time of the day or night.
You May Even Get Room Service!
Certain cruise packages include room service as part of your service. If you're someone who loves waking up and watching the sunrise with a cup of coffee, make sure to book a cruise package that includes meal delivery straight to your cabin.
Gamble the Night Away
Almost every cruise line features an on-board casino on their fleet of ships. Whether you cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Carnival, or Princess, you can take advantage of the available slots and table games almost any time of the day or night.
Cruises are Easy to Book and Plan for
Because cruises include your lodging, all your meals, and your transportation in one package, they are one of the easiest vacations to plan. All you have to decide on a cruise line and where you want to go. It doesn't get any easier than that.
Make Your Own Schedule
Cruises offer a wide range of planned activities ranging from evening shows to Bingo games and exercise classes. You can make your own schedule to include as many activities as you want — or no activities at all. When you choose to cruise, you choose to make your own schedule.
Book a Package with Unlimited Drinks
Some cruise lines offer unlimited drinks on select sailings or during their sales. These promotions can help you save big if you're someone who loves to drink beer, house wine, or spirits while you travel. Watch out for special promotions that include drinks, and you could whittle your alcohol bill down to almost zero.
Have Fun Dressing Up for Formal Night
If you're someone who longs for the days of your Senior prom, don't forget that many cruises offer formal nights. Participants usually wear a suit and tie or tuxedo for men and an evening gown for women. You can dress up and dance the night away, but you're not required to if fancy attire isn't your style.
Eat All Day Long
Whether you're a foodie or someone with a big appetite, you will love all the dining options available on most cruises. You can dine in the main dining room, a choice of buffets, or any number of specialty restaurants that may be available on your ship. Most cruises also have late-night dining options as well.
Meet People from All Over the World
No matter where you plan to cruise this winter , it's likely you'll meet people from all over the world. You may gain a broader perspective of humanity this way, and it's possible you'll learn about new customs and cultures. At the very least, meeting new people can be a lot of fun.
Watch Overwater Sunsets Every Night
If you love an overwater sunset, cruising is the ideal vacation option all year long. No matter which side of the ship your cabin is on, you can catch an amazing seaside sunset sunset every night of your cruise from one of the public decks. The best part is, every view will be slightly different than the night before.
Cruises Offer Everything You Need
If you're worried about sailing into the sunset without life's conveniences, your worries are unfounded. Modern cruise ships have all the creature comforts of home and more, from onboard internet access to laundry services, , cable television, and medical facilities. With all these amenities at your disposal, all you have to do is show up and enjoy the ride.
