LEST WE FORGET -

We salute and remember the service, courage, dedication and sacrifice our Canadian Forces men and women have made, and continue to make, for us and for Canada.
Remembrance Day is observed in Canada on 11 November at 11 a.m. It commemorates the end of hostilities during the First World War and honors all those who have served in the nation’s defense. The day was originally called Armistice Day and was first recognized in 1919, but it became officially known as Remembrance Day in 1931.

“In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae

In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.

The Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery is significant to Canada as it contains the graves of many Canadian soldiers who fought during the First World War, particularly those who died in the Battle of Vimy Ridgein April 1917. This battle was a pivotal moment for Canadian military history, marking the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together. The cemetery was established by Commonwealth troops in March 1916 and expanded after the war, ultimately containing over 7,650 burials from the First World War, with more than half remaining unidentified.
In May 2000, an unknown Canadian soldier was exhumed from this cemetery and reburied at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, symbolizing all Canadians who lost their lives during the war. The Cabaret Rouge area has a deep connection to Canada’s military heritage and serves as a site of remembrance for those who served.

The Battle of Ridge was a significant military engagement during the First World War, occurring from April 9 to April 12, 1917. It involved the Canadian Corps, which consisted of four divisions, fighting against three divisions of the German 6th Army. The battle was part of the larger Battle of Arras and aimed to capture the strategically important high ground of Vimy Ridge in northern France.
The Canadians successfully captured most of the ridge on the first day, with key objectives falling on subsequent days despite strong German resistance. The victory at Vimy Ridge is often seen as a pivotal moment for Canada, symbolizing national achievement and sacrifice. This battle marked the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together, showcasing their tactical innovation and extensive preparation.
The success at Vimy Ridge contributed to Canada’s emerging national identity and is commemorated today at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, which stands on a portion of the former battleground.

Essex Farm Cemetery is a significant World War I burial ground located in Belgium, particularly known for its association with the Canadian Army. The cemetery is situated near Ypres and was established next to a dressing station used by the Canadian Field Artillery during the Second Battle of Ypres.
The cemetery is notable for being the site where Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae of the Canadian Army Medical Corps wrote the famous poem “In Flanders Fields” in May 1915, after witnessing the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer. This poem has become emblematic of the sacrifices made by soldiers during World War I.
Essex Farm Cemetery contains 1,204 burials from World War I, including 104 unidentified servicemen. The cemetery reflects the contributions and sacrifices of various divisions, particularly highlighting those from Canada.

Tyne Cot Cemetery is the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world, located in Belgium. It contains graves of many soldiers from various Commonwealth nations, including Canada. Specifically, there are graves of Canadian servicemen who fought during the First World War, particularly those involved in the battles around Passchendaele.
The cemetery was established after the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917 and was significantly enlarged after the Armistice by consolidating graves from nearby battlefields and smaller cemeteries. Among the 11,961 Commonwealth servicemen buried or commemorated at Tyne Cot Cemetery, there are notable memorials for Canadian soldiers who lost their lives during this critical period.

The St. Julien Memorial, also known as The Brooding Soldier, is a Canadian war memorial located in the village of Saint-Julien, Langemark, Belgium. It commemorates the participation of the Canadian First Division in the Second Battle of Ypres during World War I, particularly their defense against the first poison gas attacks on the Western Front.
Designed by Lieutenant Frederick Chapman Clemesha, a World War I veteran, the memorial features a statue of a Canadian soldier with a bowed head and folded hands, symbolizing reflection and respect for those who fought. The memorial was unveiled on July 8, 1923, by Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, with Marshal Ferdinand Foch delivering a tribute to the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers.
The inscription on the memorial reads: “THIS COLUMN MARKS THE BATTLEFIELD WHERE 18,000 CANADIANS ON THE BRITISH LEFT WITHSTOOD THE FIRST GERMAN GAS ATTACKS THE 22ND-24TH OF APRIL 1915.”

LEST WE FORGET -

The Battle of Passchendaele, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres, was a significant engagement during the First World War that took place from July 31 to November 10, 1917, in Belgium. Canadian soldiers played a crucial role in this battle, which was marked by horrific conditions including heavy rain and deep mud.
After initial British assaults failed to achieve their objectives, the Canadian Corps entered the battle on October 26, 1917. They faced extreme challenges due to the muddy terrain created by relentless autumn rains and prior artillery bombardments. Despite these hardships, Canadian troops successfully captured the Passchendaele ridge on November 6, 1917.
The battle resulted in nearly 16,000 Canadian casualties, including both killed and wounded. Although the Canadians achieved their tactical objective, the overall strategic goals of the offensive were not met, leading to widespread criticism and making Passchendaele a symbol of the senseless slaughter characteristic of World War I.
