The project is located in the residential area of Lakeview, an enclave of 70s era dwellings that back onto the Glenmore Reservoir in southwest Calgary.

With its simple plan, restrained use of materials, and precise detailing, the house achieves an elegant clarity and a rustic warmth.

Using Japanese and Scandinavian influences, the design of Livingstone comes together to produce a look that’s serene, organic and refined. The exterior is pared back with a simple building mass and muted tones to assimilate with its surroundings. A limited amount of glass facing the street provides privacy and gives the front exterior an introspective appearance.

A recessed partial second storey rests over a thin roof plane that projects over the ground floor. A sequence to a sheltered main entry is accessed via wide steps past a low garden wall that symbolizes arrival into a private domain. Acting as a threshold, it forms a territorial intersection between public and private.

Livingstone combines principles that are central to our design philosophy that underscores simplicity, conceptual elegance and beauty.

The Ecke House follows the logical course of modern mid-century design. The result is a richly tactile design that is carefully woven between the house & landscape.

Entry is gained via the street defined by vertical concrete garden walls. The walk is on axis with an outdoor atrium; a key element of the design. The entry gallery, the main living area and the master suite, encircle the outdoor atrium allowing views from each of these rooms.

Cambio is a private residence set on a large exurb property located outside city limits. The site is a gently rolling landscape of aspen forest and willow sedge wetlands surrounded by other larger estate residences.

The design strategy considered the placement of the house, which provide the owners a quiet atmosphere and solitude. Conceived as a series of extruded rectangular volumes stacked one over the other, the ground level consists of main living spaces arranged in a lineal sequence. The generously proportioned kitchen, dining and Living areas open onto the sun terrace that contains a swimming pool. This open plan connects to a serviceable area which leads to an attached garage to form an 'L' configuration.

The terrace becomes the contemplative hinge-point between the house's crisp architectural geometry and the informal natural landscape.

This modern design remodel reimagines the ubiquitous two-storey quasi-colonial homes that are prevalent throughout many late '60s and early '70s developments.

The rationalized exterior deletes all the kitsch and ta**ry references like the fluted columns, paltry windows and their decorative (non-functional) shutters. The roof modifications allow for an extension off the 2nd floor level, creating a loggia above the ground level. This extends over the attached garage to create an open air terrace framed by a pergola.

A vertical scrim across the length of the front of the upper floor interstice forms a faint dark veil, creating a soft gradient of privacy, pattern and texture.

A new front garden seeks to create additional amenity space between the house and the street. Rather than having guests skirt by parked vehicles along the drive, a new walk-way to the main entry is introduced, providing a more civil and dignified segue for visitors. Low garden walls form a semi-private garden that helps to diminish the expanse of front lawn that are too often accorded on such large lots.

As a daring gesture, the Black Veil House eschews sensitivity while standing amongst other houses built on affectation and deceit. The contemporary design boldly challenges innovative restraints that were unduly connected with the housing typology of this genre.

:: grey wolf

The grey wolf house is set among a mature poplar forest, on the gently-rolling upland terrain near Sherwood Park Natural Area.

The exterior is characterised by grey vertical cladding and warm wood accents, which help to blend the 2-storey residence among a small clearing surrounded by a mix of mature aspen, white spruce and birch trees. Large expanses of glass allow one to contemplate nature and play of light throughout the seasons.

With outdoor recreation as a priority for the homeowner, the layout provides direct access to outdoor amenities, nearby hiking, cross-country skiing and the historic ‘Old Edmonton Trail’. The site is seeded with native prairie grass to eliminate ongoing maintenance while being attuned to the surrounding landscape.

The site's natural surroundings served as inspiration for the design and general material selection. In order to keep an elementary colour scheme and emphasise the vivid hues of the site's native flora, neutral interior finishes are used. The simple and rudimentary palette of wood, metal and concrete is applied to the exterior and interior. Window openings are positioned to maximise natural daylighting.

The exterior, finished in natural cedar will develop a silvery patina, blurring the boundaries between the residence and the surrounding mature tree growth.

The getaway house celebrates contemporary architectural forms and detail without abridging the basic pleasures of cottage life.

Subsumed beneath a desire to create an elegant retreat, its architecture encapsulates all of the living experience that draws on the delights of recharging and relaxing in the countryside.

This design proposal explores adding a 2nd storey level to an existing 1967 flat-roof bungalow. The 2nd storey is a low horizontal profile articulated by a combination of reticent materials and openings to create a rhythm of solid and void. The custom milled screen and stained pine add texture to complement the charcoal acrylic stucco finish. The restrained simplicity of the existing structure is maintained on the ground level.

While the need for extra space is enough motivation to renovate, a properly planned addition can bring numerous benefits to your home. This includes improved spatial arrangement, providing a more functional relationship with existing spaces, as well as improving views and connection with outdoor amenities.

Althoug building an addition is likely more cost-effective, adding to a house is not simply a question of tacking on extra space. The entire way your home is planned and used should also come into consideration.

Proposed as a relatively minimalist architectural concept, its composition reflects the programmatic needs of the home's interior spaces, generating a simple but eloquent visual contrast in context with the street.

Between its textured black cladding and smoother reflective glass surfaces, the presence of the house is eye-catching without being overbearing among its postwar era neighbours.

A dark charcoal palette creates a quiet presence that assists in blending the Holiday House with its surroundings.

The cottage's simple form and massing softens the scale of the project to create the impression of a more modest intervention. As a low-slung smaller scale bungalow, the compact programming responds to the need for ease of accessibility and to contain both the living spaces and sleeping quarters on a single level.

Simple, low-maintenance, resilient materials are selected for their aesthetics and performance in cold climate conditions. While moderate in size, windows are carefully positioned to capture daylight and views.

An entry structure consisting of a roof, supported by gables and finished in smooth italian lime plaster, emphasizes arrival to this small urban restaurant.

The interface between the building and the city sidewalk offers diners a measure of urban vitality. Glimpses enhance the restaurant's connection to the street while the scale of the building integrates amiably between an established residential district and a densely populated mixed-use locale.

:: country cabin

The modular design of the Country Cabin is intended as a turnkey two-bedroom prefabricated unit. Composed of prefabricated custom modules, the structure is constructed off-site under optimal working conditions, then shipped to its final destination and re-assembled.

With approximately 960 SF of living space, the structure is set on a large concrete terrace, providing a perfect perch to relax and appreciate the surrounding landscape. The outdoor terrace provides access off the ground floor and functions as a union between the cabin and the stone plinth that houses a wood burning fireplace.

A unique prefabricated design, the Country Cabin is sheathed in a boldy textured torrefied wood cladding. Its random rhythmic pattern helps to blend the facade easily into the woodland decor. The material will eventually gray reflecting the passage of time.

The ground level's open layout consists of main living areas and utilitarian rooms. The upper volume, comprised of bedrooms, cantilevers over the main living area forming a sheltered prospect from which to experience the outdoors.

Inside or out, owners and guests can delve into the entire range of cabin life. The architecture of the Country Cabin encapsulates all of the modern living experience that draws on the delights of recharging and relaxing in an idyllic woodland setting.

The design draws on the customary Japanese concepts of 'shakkei' (borrowed landscape) and 'hisashi' (deep eaves) to create a subtle relationship between the house & site.
