Peloponnese Peninsula Day 4: Started our coastal road journey with a short stop to the Corinth Canal, a project that spanned many centuries. The canal is more than 6km long and 23m wide, its vertical sides rising 90m above water , elevating Piraeus’ status as a major Mediterranean port, and connecting the Ionian and Aegean Seas. The canal was finally completed in 1893.
We visited the Theatre of Epidaurus, famous for its acoustics and is considered one of the best preserved ancient theatre in Greece, and constructed in the late 4th century BC. It is situated near the ancient sanctuary of Asklepios, dedicated to the god of healing. The archeological site has interesting buildings within a forest setting. You can test out the acoustics by clapping your hands but you cannot sing.
We then drove on to Nafplio for a walking tour to city’s highlights. It’s a lovely port city. You can visit the Venetian water castle of Bourtzi located in the middle by boat.
