ARTHUR & VITAS ON CHEATING

Don't be surprised when your child plays a cheater. It happens at almost every tournament, especially in the younger age groups. Unfortunately, there is too much emphasis on winning in the early years opposed to developing one's all-court skills.
I think when everyone in tennis thinks about the late Arthur Ashe they think class. Arthur was Mr.Class. When tennis people think about the late Vitas Gerulaitis they think fun. Vitas was Mr. Fun.

Arthur Ashe was cool. His advice was for players to keep their cool. Don't get upset when you are cheated because then the cheater has not only stolen a point or two from you but he or she has robbed you of your composure. Arthur's advice is, "Just quietly walk up to your opponent and calmly tell him that you are going to get a referee. Having a ref will make it better for both of us." Arthur was both a diplomat and an ambassador. It helps to take the high road when your opponent takes the low road.

Vitas, while playing junior tennis, was accused of cheating by his opponent. Remember Vitas was lightning fast. He perfected the split step. He changed direction on a dime. As this great tennis story goes.....Vitas looks at his opponent and says, "You gotta be kidding. I'm not cheating." Then Vitas proceeded to play all of his opponent's shots. Shots that were ten feet long and twenty feet wide. Vitas ran every ball down. He played everything. Finally, his opponent asked Vitas what he was doing. Vitas deadpanned, "Hey buddy, I don't have to cheat to beat you." Vitas was fast and fun. It helps to be able to take the lighter side and remove the drama from a junior tennis match.

As I make sure the kids who take my lessons know… TENNIS above all else, IS FUN! 🤩 (especially with THIS view of Beaver Valley below!)
