Did you know Fogo Island plays host to seven seasons? Today marks the beginning of Trap Berth Season (June 1 - 30). Prior to the cod moratorium in 1992, each year on the first of June, Fogo Island fishers dropped their markers for cod trap fishing berths at 12pm; this time of the year once holding an overall feeling of hope for a successful fishing season.

Despite belonging to neither spring nor summer, Trap Berth Season is marked by longer, warmer days, blooming wildflowers, and whales migrating off our shores.

Did you know there are 11 distinct communities on Fogo Island? Seldom and the neighbouring Little Seldom are the most heavily forested settled areas on the Island. They are home to one of the Fogo Island Co-operative Society's processing plants, as well as the Co-op head office. Originally known as Seldom Come By, passing ships headed for Labrador would seldom come by this port and not stop in to its deep, welcoming harbour for supplies or to seek shelters from storms.

Today, we remember The Royal Newfoundland Regiment and their role at Beaumont-Hamel in the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916. It was a day like no other as the Regiment was annihilated by machine gun fire. Over 800 young men went over the wall and 68 answered roll call the next day. These young men were our future leaders for many communities in Newfoundland, but never returned home. Today, we remember their sacrifice, valour, and eternal sacrifice.

Forget-Me-Not, a print by artist Rod Hand, is dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of The Royal Newfoundland Regiment's role at Beaumont-Hamel. More information available on our website at www.newfoundlandshop.ca/RodHandGallery.htm
