Ready for a history lesson? Prohibition was a very significant time for the 1000 Islands region.📃🍷⚓️🍻

Temperance societies were prevalent before the turn of the century, but World War I was a turning point. In Canada the legal distilleries and retail outlets were closed during the last two years of the war for an economy measure, and after peace was restored, owing to some pressure from abstainers, the sale of liquor was not resumed. By 1919, Quebec prohibited the production of hard liquor, but allowed beer and wine, while Ontario banned everything except locally produced wine.

In the United States thirty-one states were dry by 1917, and when Amendment Number 18 of the Constitution was ratified the whole country came under prohibition. The great drought lasted until 1932, when Amendment Number 21 was ratified. In Canada the reaction against prohibition set in earlier. By 1921, Quebec was selling all forms of liquor, and by 1927, Ontario had followed suit. That year the running of liquor across the river dramatically increased. When both New York and Ontario had been dry, the trade was moving in both directions, depending on the market. After 1927, some Canadians made modest fortunes as the availability of legal alcohol became widespread in Ontario. Americans continued to seek illegal avenues to gain possession of alcohol.

How lucky are we to live and work in such a beautiful town?

It is widely known that the War of 1812 was a pivotal time for Gananoque. Did you know that leading up to this period, Gananoque consisted of just four houses clustered around a mill? The person credited with this initial development of Gananoque is no one other than Joel Stone. He became a successful businessman in Gananoque and also began a ferry service as early as 1801 to move people, animals, and produce across the Gananoque River. Joel Stone later defended the town and surrounding area in the War of 1812.

Isn't this aerial shot of Mermaid and Bostwick absolutely stunning?! Thank you for sharing your art John Haig, Photographer 📸

Did you know that colonial military conflict between Britain and France (Seven Years' War), and later between Britain and the US (War of 1812), was responsible for many place-names, such as the Navy, Admiralty, and Lake Fleet islands? Endymion, Camelot and Mermaid islands are named after gunboats; others such as Gordon and Stovin were named after military commanders. There is certainly some rich history in the 1000 Islands!

Ever wondered how the 1000 Islands region was formed? Glaciers retreated 10,000 years ago scraping sediments and exposing the rounded k***s of an ancient mountain chain. When the St. Lawrence River flooded the area on its path to the Atlantic Ocean, 1000 hilltops became the 1000 Islands. Imagine how different our region would be without the St. Lawrence river. We certainly would not be able to kayak!

Can you spot the island cottage in the background of this picture? 🏡

While the National Park controls 26 of the 1864 islands in the 1000 Islands region, the remaining islands are privately owned. This fact surprises many tourists, who often assume that all of the islands are public. It is important to respect the privacy of island owners while enjoying the St. Lawrence River. Be sure to only land on National Park islands and to keep a respectful distance while paddling past these private properties.

Happy paddling everyone!
