During the 1700s lobsters were so plentiful that they used to wash ashore on Massachusetts beaches in piles up to 2 feet high. Lobsters were considered the “poor man’s chicken” and primarily used for fertilizer or fed to prisoners and slaves. Some indentures servants even revolted against being forced to eat the meat and the colony agreed that they would not be fed lobster meat more than three times a week.

As the American rail transportation system began to develop it made it easier for people to travel from state to state. Train workers realized that they could serve lobster to passengers because it was plentiful and cheap. Unaware of the negative stigma that was attached to these crustaceans, the passengers believed they were eating a decadent food and began requesting lobster even when they weren’t on the train.

Amazing how perspectives can change once you can make money from something.

Winter on the island is a magical time, and getting here is all part of the adventure. While it’s true that the Bay of Fundy can have its fair share of wild weather, our ferry captains are experts at navigating these waters. They’ll never sail unless it's safe, so you can feel confident about making the crossing—even in the colder months. 🛟🌊

Here are some tips to make your winter ferry trip smoother:

☎️ Always check the ferry status by calling Coastal Transport at (506) 662-3724 or visiting www.coastaltransport.ca before your trip.

🧥 Bundle up for the brisk air! You'll want to stay warm when walking to and from the ferry.

💊 If you’re prone to seasickness, don’t forget to take Gravol or an anti-nausea medication 45 minutes before departure.

⛴️ For a calmer ride, grab a seat in the middle or back of the ferry where there’s less motion.

‼️‼️ Remember, we refund your reservation if the ferry doesn’t run and even offer free accommodation if you’re stuck due to cancellations. Don’t let winter weather hold you back from an unforgettable island experience!
