West Croft Stables is a place for Northern Ontario, Canada, riders to experience Horse Trials in their own back yard. It can be used as an introduction to the sport or just as a training venue, it boasts a full cross country course miles of trails, dressage arena and stadium ring. It also offers riders in the Greater Sudbury Region a place to develop their riding skills

Last day for sending in entries for West Croft Stables Schooling Horse Trials August 25 th .
We are running 3 divisions, EV60, EV75 and EV85 with 90 options. It promises to be a fun day .
I will be sending out ride times , numbers and x country maps Thursday evening .
Can’t Ride come and help out and enjoy the comradery.

This morning I was thinking about costs to keep horses .
Most people board there horses at a facility. It is costly! But where does the money go ?
Per day costs per horse to run our facilities are astonishing.
We have an indoor arena , outdoor arena, standard size dressage ring , a x country course , trails and 8 acres of turnout. Maintenance costs ( repairs, farm vehicle maintenance , snow removal, etc. )about $16,000. 00 before improvements. Approximately $5.00 per horse per day .
The horses need to eat , they have continuous hay supply about $6.00 per horse per day and about $1.00 of grain per day .
We have to heat and light the place plus electrify the fences $0.50 per horse per day.
Everything has to be insured and we all know what that cost !!! $4.00 per horse .
Plus someone knowledgeable has to feed and care for the horses daily $8.00 per day per horse . ( including WSIB and EI and CPP ) .
All that adds up to $24:50 per day per horse .
So just to recover these costs for 31 day we need $783.50 per horse or $8,942.50 per horse for a year .
Oh yes and the government take 13% of our income in taxes . So in order to actually get enough to cover our cost we need $10,105.02 per horse per year .
Horses are expensive, but boarding barns are not making money on keeping your horses .

Thank you to everyone who came to the clinic and show this weekend especially Jennifer Pejic Equestrian. We had a wonderful time learning to connect with our horses, improving our positions and enjoying the thrills of showing.
As usual our volunteers made the show day possible. Without them we would not be able to do what we do .
Thank you also to Greenhawk and Mireille Voisin for donating prizes .

In honour of all the TB horses who come of the track and make fantastic riding horses and especially Vie who chose to go down a different route than eventing . Please if you are riding in our show and your horse is an OTTB make sure I know and can put them in to compete for this prize .

Will be starting a waiting list .
Jennifer Pejic (www.Jennifer Pejic.com) is coming back to West Croft Stables.
This clinic is suitable for all disciplines of riders.
One day will focus on improving your relationship with your horse using ground , obstacle and other training techniques.
The second day will focus on increasing your x country riding skills . ( Or maybe you want to do 2 relationship building days!)

In the past this has been a very popular sign up soon if you want to ensure a spot.
Cost $113 per day $75 deposit required to hold the spot. Let me know what days work for you. Thursday June 6th will be a half day suitable for local horses.
Individual Paddocks and limited stabling available on site $40.00 per night.
On site camping, no hook ups.

June 8-9 th and August 24-25th . Both dates are one week earlier than usual.

Some photos of our final eventing weekend of 2023 at Wesley Clover Parks after a busy season. It has been fun to be part of the nerves, improvements , ups and downs . All are exited for next season.

Sarah Clever has been taking lessons with me at West Croft Stables for about a year or so. Last weekend she competed in her third Ontario Eventing Association event and got her first ribbon . The whole West Croft Stables team was proud to watch Sarah ride , we enjoyed seeing her progress over the last month of competitions and can’t wait to see where this takes her. This is her stadium round .

Here’s hoping we still have water in the pond June 18th . We have some exciting new jumps on the way .

Today was dry enough to school x country and Boots loved it . Kate was pretty excited too.

West Croft Stables riders enjoyed a warm March Sunday working on the dressage phase of eventing. These fun days are to practice the feeling of being in a competitive environment in the safe environment of the home barn. It is amazing how much pressure a few spectators add. Thank you Christine Faux for making the day so successful. So much was learnt by everyone .

This is the correct use of a dressage whip. Lady is our new little mouser . She’s pretty friendly, loves to play and cuddle on your lap.

Tiggs has been spreading his summer here at West Croft Stables being loved and trained by Paige Crowder . He has told us he loves going x country. In September he will go back to Kate and he needed me to make sure she understands eventing is his sport . This morning we played in the x country course . Kate and Tiggs are on the same page .

Entries for the Hunter trials will be done on site Saturday. There will be 3 classes Novice (.75m) Open (1m) Pairs one will do the larger jumps the other the smaller. Where the height of the jump is changed we will have them smaller for the pairs .

This is a great way to spend the morning relaxing and strengthening horses. Jenny and I riding chestnuts

Today we had some fun with dressage , interestingly all the horses became more switched on doing these exercises. They had something to focus on . Kora and Donna showed there riders 5 changes every 3 strides down the bending poles . Neat for riders who have never experienced that before.

When you get it right it looks easy .
