The lovely museum in Molson only has two days open. https://molsonmuseums.org/history/ if you're around the area and can drop in, don't miss it for 2024. We continue to be open daily, hour changing after Labour Day from 10-4pm.

History In 1896, gold rich ore was discovered in the local area and miners started to come in and settle, swelling the population of just a dozen or so to close to 300. In two short years, it became apparent that only one of the mines was producing any ore, and so the population fell off as the pros...

To close our 2024 gathering, we want to start a discussion about how to sustain change in a time of crisis. Join this panel for a conversation about burnout, stress, and finding ways to support yourself as a human being during a time of constant upheaval and uncertainty. After another gruelling summer, it is important that we make space to recognize that many of us are not okay and to offer a forum for people to discuss managing stress and self-care.

Arts, culture, and heritage workers have the second-highest rates of stress, anxiety, and burnout of any profession in the country. For the past five years, we have weathered an ongoing pandemic, have been impacted and sometimes displaced by climate emergencies, have watched wars and genocides around the world, and have still gone to work. At the same time inflation has eaten into our organizational budgets and governments at all levels have contracted the grants we depend on for survival. Many of us are experiencing burnout. If we don’t take action to protect our mental health and create cultures of care within our organizations, we won’t be able to sustain the work needed to transform our sector.

Moderated by: Tracy Calogheros. Panellists: Kate Cox, Barkerville Historic Town & Park; Shirley Hogan, Canadian Mental Health Association of Northern BC

WE HAVE N-95 Masks available at the museum for free for you to pick up!!!!

They are given to us on behalf of the Government of Canada, the Canadian Red Cross is distributing N95 respirator masks to organizations located in communities at risk of exposure to wildfire smoke that may impact air quality.

Smoke can travel hundreds or thousands of kilometres from the fire zone. Even if you're not close to a fire, you can still be affected by the smoke. There is no safe level of exposure to wildfire smoke as it can pose a risk to your health even at very low levels. Learn more about wildfire smoke, air quality and health at canada.ca/wildfiresmoke.

BC Heritage Sites is a key program of Japanese Canadian Legacies, developed to assist local communities in British Columbia in promoting public awareness of pre-war Japanese Canadian history through interpretive heritage projects at sites of ancestral communities and other places of historical significance including sites of wartime incarceration.

Following years of planning and deep, collaborative work, the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society is extremely proud to announce 27 sites across the province that have received funding through the BC Heritage Sites program (the Hastings Park proposal is in development).

Sites were chosen based on their significance to the prewar and wartime communities, also taking into account the infrastructure in place to maintain them.

We thank co-coordinator Linda Kawamoto Reid who led the four-month research and discovery phase, bringing decades of knowledge to the program. A huge debt of gratitude goes to the assessment team of Nao Seko, Mike Aoki, Mike Matsuo, Kim Kalanj, and Yasushi Oki, who for over three months assessed feasibility and risk management of all applications. Thank you to Jeff Masuda, Sherri Kajiwara, Sachiko Okuda for reviewing draft guidelines written by Eiko Eby. The Heritage Sites Team of Susanne Tabata, Linda Kawamoto Reid, and Lane McGarrity looks forward to sharing the progress of these important sites so that we can begin the process of reclaiming our unique history and narrative.

Join Lorenda and Leia as we read through multiple levels of UNDRIP reports to better understand the direction, goals and actions our sector is working to support. Documents like the CMA’s Moved to Action report have sought to determine the level of UNDRIP implementation that exists in the sector, but many of us have only a general understanding of what UNDRIP asks us to achieve and have not often engaged thoughtfully with the declaration.

Join us every other week as we move through the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007), The Government of Canada’s United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act Action Plan (2023), and the Government of B.C’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act Action Plan (2022) with eight discussion sessions. For the ninth meeting, attendees are encouraged to read and share any action plans from their regional districts or municipalities to continue the learning down to a regional lens.

The next session is Tuesday, July 16, at 10:00 am. For more information: https://museum.bc.ca/event-list/?eid=80

Tomoshibi 灯 Journey: Lighting the Way Through Japanese Canadian Sites of Internment

The Tomoshibi 灯 Journey bus tour is taking place this week, from July 15 – 19, 2024. For five days, a group of 50 participants will visit various Japanese Canadian internment sites across British Columbia. The tour is designed to provide a comprehensive experience, including trauma-informed support and healing circles from start to finish, to help participants process the stark contrast between the breathtaking beauty of British Columbia and the dark history of the internment sites.

Participants will explore towns and buildings that once housed internees and visit fields where internment shacks once stood. This journey is both a physical and emotional passage to the past, illuminating the way forward.

We gratefully acknowledge the support from the Intergenerational Wellness Intergenerational Group Gatherings Fund of the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society.

🎉 SNCEWIPS MUSEUM & GIFT STORE - WEST KELOWNA

The Sncewips Heritage Museum began as a repository after Westbank First Nation achieved self-government in 2005. As our collection grew, we transitioned to the public sphere by opening our doors as a museum on June 14th, 2014. Five years later, we launched our much anticipated move and re-opened our space on February 1st, 2020. Through all of its changes, our museum continues to provide a protected place for sqilxʷ culture and heritage.

As an Indigenous owned and operated business, we hold space for syilx voices, connect our community to opportunity, and maintain a safe space for open, honest conversation. We encourage everyone who lives and plays in the Okanagan to drop-in, book a tour, and do their part to learn about the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the syilx people.
